Wikipedia has both 4.6 mill and 1.1 mill or so - go to the page which lists China's cities by population.

Then, if you go to this page, then it is 258,000 people. World Population Review The Chinese put smoke and mirrors around everything it seems. Who knows how many people are in that city? Or is it the difference between city boundaries and greater metro area? :-)

This one says 980k or so in 2020 census.

I think it is closer to 1 million than 4.5. Someone did an overzealous edit on Wikipedia.

I guess China has so much of good infrastructure in all kinds of places now. I had not even heard of this city Jiujiung, a city of just below 1 million population, and they are doing a WTA 250 there. It is like doing a WTA 250 event in a city like Kota (Rajasthan) or Madurai (TN)...
Jay, as per Wikipedia, Jiujiang has a population of around 4.6 million-
Jiujiang
A bit confused about this as we if we see top cities in China on Wiki it does not list Jiujiang in that range.
If it is 4.6 million it quite big.
Yeah, the wiki page says 4.6 Million and this page (and other pages) https://worldpopulationreview.com/cities/china/jiujiang says 1 million. Google says 983K... What gives?

We need our own PiKiBedia (PKB) to settle the population of Jiujiung issue once for all. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has even been to the city himself.

My bet would be 1.3 million.

It is a prefecture-level city. In China, that means tier-II city. These cities are not near 5 million in size although some are growing close to it ... so I can't be sure. Although Wikipedia works pretty well and is generally as consistent as Brittanica, in this case, I consulted Britannica. Unfortunately, it says that city had 450k people in 2002. There is no way a 10-fold increase happened in 20 years and the world did not hear more about it although theoretically possible. It is also an ancient city (well, China is ancient). See here: Britannica entry

It would be great to hear from first-hand visitors. Unfortunately, the closest I have been to is Shanghai.

On a different tangent, Britannica and print post and journalism will cease. Where do we check then?

There will likely be private online collections of data (some perhaps from the governments) such as this for the US.
https://usafacts.org/reports/annual-report/

Interesting fact is that rates of almost all crimes in the US have declined significantly from the 1990s to the 2020s although the prevalence of social media and cameras may make it seem like crime is rampant these days.

Poor Prarthna (vicariously) must be wondering why her thread has been hijacked to such extremities!

Yes, they need to be moved but since disparate topics like Bengali pronunciation, Chinese city size, and US crime rate crept into the thread, I am wondering where to move them. Maybe we should have a thread, "Misc. topics that nobody else may care about.."

Certainly to General Chit Chat section. Maybe in the Just for Fun thread? Or the Interesting thing I found? Or just open a plain old Misc thread as you mentioned ...

PGT is playing the Midland challenger with Anastasia Tikhonova. They won a W60 title last year, so should be familiar with their playing styles and I hope they have a winning reunion this week.

W125 Midland, Michigan (Indoor Hard)

R1 Prarthana G Thombare (11.11) / Anastasia Tikhonova (11.29) vs Rasheeda McAdoo (10.98) / Sophie Chang (11.18)

Should be a winnable first round based on the cumulative UTR.

Dinesh, thanks for posting the UTRs. I love that. Maybe others will consider doing that if it is easy for them to do so too. Instead of the ATP/WTA rankings.
