Manika Batra Trumps Ayhika Mukherjee as PBG Bengaluru Smashers Beat Puneri Paltan Table Tennis 10-5 in IndianOil UTT 2024
Star paddler Manika Batra survived the giant-slaying Ayhika Mukherjee to lead her team, PBG Bengaluru Smashers to 10-5 victory against Puneri Paltan Table Tennis in IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium today.
Manika lost the first game of her headline clash with Ayhika, falling into similar traps that had caught the league’s highest-ranked player, Bernadette Szocs, last time around. However, the Asian and Commonwealth Games medallist retaliated in back-to-back games, winning the match 2-1.
The franchise-based league is promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the auspices of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
Puneri Paltan Table Tennis made UTT history even before the opening serve dropped. The team from Pune became the first ever to name all six of their players in the starting line-up, spread across five matches.
The tie started with 17-year-old Ankur Bhattacharjee of Puneri Paltan Table Tennis taking on PBG Bengaluru Smashers’ Jeet Chandra. Both Ankur and Jeet had recorded outstanding sweeping wins in their previous clashes in IndianOil UTT 2024 - Ankur over Lilian Bardet and Jeet over Sharath Kamal - but it was the teenager who emerged victorious this time, winning alternate games to claim the match 2-1.
Manika returned to the table for the mixed doubles round, partnering captain Alvaro Robles. Puneri Paltan Table Tennis, meanwhile, sent on Natalia Bajor and Anirban Ghosh, who stretched the PBG Bengaluru Smashers right until the end only to fall to a 2-1 defeat. Robles followed his prolific doubles display with a similar 2-1 win in the second men’s singles of the tie over two-time Olympian Joao Monteiro.
With PBG Bengaluru Smashers needing just one point to win the tie, USA paddler Lily Zhang beat Puneri Paltan Table Tennis’ sixth different player on the night, Yashini Sivashankar, to get her team over the line.
For their efforts, Manika and Zhang were named the Indian and Foreign Player of the Tie, respectively. Ankur, meanwhile, claimed the DafaNews Shot of the Tie honour.
Tuesday's only tie will see the U Mumba TT take on Ahmedabad SG Pipers at 19:30, with both teams looking for their second win in IndianOil UTT 2024.
IndianOil UTT 2024 is being broadcast live on Sports18 Khel and streamed online on JioCinema (India) and Facebook Live (Outside India). Tickets are available online on BookMyShow and offline at the box office near Gate no. 1 of the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai.

IndianOil UTT 2024: Sathiyan’s Dabang Delhi TTC Looking for First Tie Win Against Harmeet’s Athlead Goa Challengers
Both Dabang Delhi TTC and Athlead Goa Challengers will have a point to prove when they meet for the first time in IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.
Led by Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, the team from Delhi has lost both its ties so far. However, the low margins of their defeats mean Dabang Delhi TTC are one heavy win away from jumping from their current spot in seventh to one reserved for the playoffs.
Harmeet Desai’s Athlead Goa Challengers, on the other hand, are heading into their tie against Dabang Delhi TTC on the back of a heavy defeat against Ahmedabad SG Pipers; they will be looking to make amends quickly and prove their mettle as the reigning champions.
The franchise-based league is promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the auspices of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI). All the thrilling ties are being aired on Sports18 Khel on TV and streaming live on JioCinema in India and Facebook Live outside India. Tickets are available online through BookMyShow and offline at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium box office near Gate no. 1.
Sathiyan’s potential bout with Harmeet will headline the clash between Dabang Delhi TTC and Athlead Goa Challengers. The pair are two of India’s finest paddlers and have an Olympic appearance each to their name.
Further down the pecking order, Dabang Delhi TTC’s Diya Chitale will be under the spotlight following her impressive win against Poymantee Baisya of Chennai Lions. She will likely square up against Athlead Goa Challengers’ young prodigy looking to make her mark this season: Yashaswini Ghorpade.
From the teams’ foreign contingent, all eyes will be on Athlead Goa Challengers’ Yangzi Liu and her sensational unbeaten streak that has not left her company since the start of the previous season. Liu has won both her singles matches in IndianOil UTT 2024 and will look to prolong that run in a potential clash against Dabang Delhi TTC’s Orawan Paranang.
Squads
Dabang Delhi TTC: Sathiyan G, Orawan Paranang (Thailand), Diya Chitale, Andreas Levenko (Austria), Yashansh Malik, Lakshita Narang
Athlead Goa Challengers: Harmeet Desai, Yangzi Liu (Australia), Yashaswini Ghorpade, Mihai Bobocica (Italy), Sudhanshu Grover, Sayali Wani

Manav Thakkar beats Sharath Kamal as U Mumba TT snatches narrow win over Chennai Lions in IndianOil UTT 2024 thriller
Manav Thakkar pulled of a nail-biting victory against the experienced Achanta Sharath Kamal as U Mumba TT defeated Chennai Lions 8-7 in an exciting clash of the IndianOil Ultimate Table Tennis 2024 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Friday.
U Mumba TT thus jumped to the second spot on the league table with 29 points while Chennai Lions have 19 points.
In a clash between youth and experience, the talented Thakkar staged a superb comeback after suffering an early reversal to carve out a 6-11, 11-8, 11-9 victory. Thakkar, who thus maintained his all-win record this season, anchored the victory for U Mumba TT.
Thakkar had teamed up with Spanish star Maria Xiao earlier in the evening to outclass the Chennai Lions pair of Sharath and Sakura Mori 11-7, 11-10, 11-4 in the mixed doubles match.
U Mumba TT, who were enjoying the lead at that point, seemed to be cruising to a comfortable win but super mom Mouma Das had other plans. The experienced Team India star almost took Chennai Lions past the line in the last match of the tie – the women’s singles – before Maria Xiao saved the day for U Mumba TT off the last shot of the tie.
Earlier, Nigeria star Aruna Quadri gave U Mumba TT the early lead with a hard-earned 10-11, 11-9, 11-7 victory against Jules Rolland. Both players were evenly matched in the early stages with points being traded back and forth.
However, Mori defeated Sutirtha Mukherjee in the women’s singles to help U Mumba TT draw level and set up the tie for an exciting finish.

Re: Ultimate Table Tennis league
Sharath Kamal beats Mihai Bobocica but Athlead Goa Challengers hunt down Chennai Lions 9-6 in nail-biting IndianOil UTT 2024 tie
Achanta Sharath Kamal gave the home crowd something to cheer about by defeating Mihai Bobocica as Athlead Goa Challengers beat Chennai Lions 9-6 in a well contested IndianOil UTT 2024 tie at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai on Saturday.
Sharath Kamal dominated his Italian opponent to clinch a 2-1 (11-6, 11-10, 6-11) verdict although Bobocica did well to take a valuable point off the veteran Indian star.
The franchise-based league is promoted by Niraj Bajaj and Vita Dani under the auspices of the Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI).
Saturday’s result propelled Athlead Goa Challengers to the joint second spot on the league table with 29 points. Chennai Lions are fourth with 25 points.
Sakura Mori doubled the lead for the Chennai Lions with a closely fought win over Yangzi Liu 2-1 (11-9, 11-9, 9-11 ). The Japan star thus maintained her undefeated run this season while Liu suffered a second consecutive defeat.
Liu, however, had her revenge right after as she joined Harmeet Desai for the mixed doubles match. The pair produced an impressive performance to outplay the formidable combination of Sharath and Sakura 3-0 (11-9,11-10, 11-7) as Athlead Goa Challengers charged into the lead.
Desai then bolstered the advantage for Athlead Goa Challengers by claiming his second victory of the tie. The Team India star was at the top of his game as he defeated the in-form Jules Rolland 2-1 (6-11, 11-7, 11-5).
Yashaswini Ghorpade pulled off a giant slaying act by defeating the veteran Mouma Das 2-1 (11-5, 11-8, 3-11).
Earlier in the evening, Bernadette Szocs’s victory over Manika Batra in an electrifying women’s singles match turned out to be in a losing cause as PBG Bengaluru Smashers edged out Ahmedabad SG Pipers 9-6.
The Romania star thus avenged her defeat to Manika at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The Bengaluru-based outfit are now at the top of the league table with 41 points.
Lilian Bardet gave Ahmedabad SG Pipers a winning start by getting the better of Anthony Amalraj 2-1 (11-9, 11-10, 10-11) in the opening clash. Bernadette then teamed up with Manush Shah to clinch the mixed doubles match 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8) against the PBG Bengaluru Smashers combination of Manika and Alvaro Robles.
Robles brought PBG Bengaluru Smashers back into contention by winning all three games of the men’s singles clash against Shah (11-8, 11-7, 11-8). That saw PBG Bengaluru Smashers claw their way back to equal terms and Lily Zhang wrapped up a last gasp victory by blanking Krittwika Sinha Roy 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-10) in the second women’s singles.
Yangzi Liu was adjudged the Foreign player of the tie while Harmeet Desai was named the Indian player of the tie.
