Re: Riya Bhatia thread

Post by jayakris »

After a 2-week break, Riya is playing at the ITF W15 in Xiamen, China (Hard):

[R1] Riya Bhatia (IND,876) vs (7) Fang Ying Xun (CHN,697)
and
[R1] (2) Riya Bhatia (IND)/ Michika Ozeki (JPN) vs Zhang-Qian Wei (CHN)/ Zi Ye Zhang (CHN)

Not an easy R1 match. If she can stay away from mistakes, Riya always has a chance. Go for it.

[R1] Riya Bhatia (IND,876) l. (7) Fang Ying Xun (CHN,697), 67(2) 36

Nice to see that Riya did not have big double fault issues today. Only four. She actually led and served for the set at 5-3 at first, but Fang Ying took over from there. The long interruption (rain?) before the tiebreaker and a shift to indoor courts also didn't help :(

Also,
[R1] (2) Riya Bhatia (IND)/ Michika Ozeki (JPN) d. Zhang-Qian Wei (CHN)/ Zi Ye Zhang (CHN), 64 61
Update:
[QF] (2) Riya Bhatia (IND)/ Michika Ozeki (JPN) d. Ke Ren (CHN)/ Ruirui Zou (CHN), 26 62 [10-8]
[SF] (2) Riya Bhatia (IND)/ Michika Ozeki (JPN) l. (3) Jing-Jing Lu (CHN)/ Fang Ying Xun (CHN), 26 76(4) [7-10]

Good work by Ria. She qualified into the ITF W35 in Kunshan, China (Hard):

[Q1] (8) Ria Bhatia (IND,877) d. Ke Ren (CHN,1356), 62 26 [10-7]
[Q2] (8) Ria Bhatia (IND,877) d. (9) Xichen Zhao (CHN,883), 62 61

But she still had 9 double faults in the Q1 and 8 in the Q2. Way too many. She has to fix that. In the main draw,

[R1] (Q) Ria Bhatia (IND,877) vs Hong Yi Cody Wong (HKG,472)

[R1] (Q) Ria Bhatia (IND,904) l. (8) Hong Yi Cody Wong (HKG,476), 36 36

10 double faults again. I am becoming a broken record on this :(

[R1] (2) Riya Bhatia (IND)/ Michika Ozeki (JPN) l. Fang Ying Xun (CHN)/ Qiu Yu Ye (CHN), 16 26

Riya just cannot get past FangYing. Both her last two doubles losses were against her (and FangYng changed partners this week, as Riya stayed with Michika). Riya's singles loss last week was also against FangYing. 3 of the last 4 losses against her.

Also, I notice that the second server on Riya's side served only once in the first set and was broken at 0-3 with two DFs in a row from 30-30. Then the second server got broken in the second set at 1-1 with THREE double faults in a row from 15-0. She held later for one time at 1-5... I can't tell from ITF's match progress data who the server was - but 5 doubles faults just cannot happen in only 18 serves. If that was Riya, then it is more supporting fodder for my continued rant on the problem Riya now has. Double faults. And DFs happening in bunches.

I suspect that it is NOT a mental issue either. DFs can be a mental issue, but that is only for the one or two DFs one may hit at crunch points. That does not seem to be Riya's issue, to me, from the data that i keep looking at carefully. 3 DFs in a row from 1-1 at 15-0 can't be for any mental stress reason. But only very few of her matches have been on live stream and I have seen only one recently to observe more (but I am no expert to say what she needs to fix!). I think some tactical/technical fix is surely needed, to avoid these back-to-back DFs that happen. I have to think that some good coach can fix it. She needs to go to somebody for this, if she has not looked into it already. There is no point in continuing to play matches when you cannot even get to your strengths on court because you can't put the ball in play.

Wow, beating Chinese in China and a higher ranked one is never easy. Good luck, Riya.

I forgot about checking on Riya!... Good job qualifying in. Yeah, it is never easy to upset a higher ranked Chinese in China.

She had 12 and 7 double faults each in the Q1 and Q2 matches though. That problem is just not going away. It also points to how good the rest of her game must be, and how much better her results could be if she were not giving away free points like that.

First service game aggainst Jiaqi Wang, and it is back-to-back DFs. Loses serve. At 0-3, she saved 4 break pts from 0-40 down in the 4th game, only to serve back-to-back DFs again from deuce and et broken. 4 DFs already in just 2 service games. Now 0-4... I will stop following the match. Can't take it. I feel bad for Ria. She is clearly struggling with the problem.

Riya is in Hamburg playing the W75 event this week, where she lost in the final qualifying round in 3 sets but has reached the doubles quarterfinal with Lian Tran. The pair will face the top seeds in the QF round.

Next week, she will be in Solarino (Italy) for a W35 tournament.

Riya and partner has a chance to beat the #1 seeds in W75 Hamburg QF, and Riya keeps serving double faults at crucial moments. The score is 7-5 4-6 5-2 (STB) in favor of Riya/Tran but please get a grip, girl. Her partner is playing some amazing tennis.

Riya/Lian won 7-5 4-6 10-5. Probably the biggest doubles result of Riya’s career?

Riya/Lian moves to the finals at the W75 Hamburg ITF. They beat 3rd seed Perrin/Wagner 63 0-6 10-4. I am happy something is going well for Riya this week as she continues to struggle finding her singles form.

This is a special tournament at the ITF level this week, as grand slam champion Belinda Bencic returned to play after giving birth to her daughter (but lost in the second round).

W75 Hamburg ITF, Germany (Indoor HC):

R1 Riya Bhatia (513)/Lian Tran (NED,417) 0-6 7-6 10-4 Julia Avdeeva (XXX,453)/Fabienne Gettwart (GER,658)
QF Riya Bhatia (513)/Lian Tran (NED,417) 7-5 4-6 10-5 (1) Jessica Maleckova (CZE,140)/ Miriam Skoch (CZE,88)
SF Riya Bhatia (513)/Lian Tran (NED,417) 6-3 0-6 10-4 (3) Conny Perrin (SUI,108)/ Anita Wagner (BIH,168)
F Riya Bhatia (513)/Lian Tran (NED,417) vs Madeline Brooks (GBR,152)/ Isabella Haverlag (NED,154) :goodluck:

This is a very promising run. Hope she considers the option of becoming a doubles specialist like P Thombare and Shinde

Only India cares about doubles in tennis. No one else does. I wish we could separate doubles in this forum so I can ignore it. I realize there is a distinct following here and I have no choice but to wade through pages of doubles to find singles results. Take MxD as an example—except slams and maybe the Hopman Cup (?), it’s not even played in any tournament. Adding those to to slam title wins, as legit as they are, is just stat padding. Ok, shoot the rotten tomatoes and eggs at me. I’m ready.
