But the big positives, from this set so far, that he is back to his former self, as honestly seeing him play last week thought those effects would last longer.

Also in the past 6 months clearly noticed his serving has greatly improved, putting in lot of power and correct placements, the power element symbolized by the fact Baez was standing 10 to 15 feet behind the baseline to recieve Sumit's serve, nice to see his strong bashing power transfer to his serving which I always wondered why wasn't he able to do this transfer when he used to be routinely broken but now the coaches have fixed that area well.

^^^ Good comments, Rajiv. Yes, lately, his serve has not been a sitting duck or a liability. It is not a weapon or anything but he can live with that serve. I could not see today's match.

At the ATP250 in Geneva, Switzerland (Clay)

[R1] Sumit Nagal (IND,93) l. (5) Sebastian Baez (ARG,19), 67(7) 36

That is actually a better scoreline than I expected, after seeing the match last week. He gets a bit more rest and should be able to do something at the French Open. If not, definitely at the Heilbronn challenger the week after.

Sumit lost, but great match! Couldn't watch it but just from the scores and points commentary. I am happy with his performance against someone like Baez who is very good on clay. Looks like the Sumit of 2 months ago is back! I wish he got some more match play before RG though. If the draw is favorable, I am sure he can win a few rounds there.

RG is up next.

Encouraging performance by Sumit! He lead 4-1 in the first set, then 3-0 in the first set TB and also had a set point, so was quite close to winning the first set.

Being competitive against Baez who has won 2 clay titles this year and beat Rune in the Rome masters is a good performance by Sumit. Hopefully, he gets a good draw at the FO!

At some point, he will have to convert these leads. Low ranked players do pull upsets. Not too often. So, I am fine with a bunch of losses but at times, he needs to win at least the sets you are ahead in and then grind the other player in the second set, etc. taking it to the third when anything can happen when people are tired. Anyway, good fight for now. Hope for a grand upset in the near future. Top 100 players have a few in their careers. Top 50 even more.

Pretty awesome that the Djoker chose to practice with Sumit. I see it as a recognition of how good Sumit is on clay. It should also give Sumit a conference boost.

Sumit plays No 18 Khachanov at RG.

Bad luck...but who knows, he may pull a surprise.

So Sumit is playing 3 back to back clay challengers to prepare for Wimbledon.....

Surprised to see so many clay court challengers during the grass court season.

He feels he does not have much chance at Wimbledon and 1 week or so preparation will not change anything.

I guess out of these 3 weeks of challenger, if he goes deep in first couple of weeks, he will skip the third week. First week is critical though as Olympic ranking cutoff date is Monday after that i.e 10th June.

Fantastic. He should play to his strength. Clay challengers please. It also is easier on the body.

Pretty sure he’s going to Wimbledon for the paycheck. Probably expects to be one and done there. He will look to clay to pick up points so that he can make US open main draw which is probably his priority right now.
