ITF M15/M25 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, May 2024

Post by jayakris »

A whole caravan of Indians are at the M15 and M25 at Addis Ababa this week and the next.

The Indian #4 Karan Singh was initially expected to lead the pack this week, but he withdrew after 4 weeks of continuous play and an injury retirement last week at Monastir. He is still in the list for the M25 next week.

The good news is that Dev Javia got a wildcard to the main draw. At #1152, he would have just made it into the draw anyway, but I assume he had not entered earlier. SD Prajwal Dev (4th seed), Ishaque Eqbal (5th seed), Sid Banthia, Chirag Duhan, Nitin Sinha, Madhvin Kamath, Rahav Jaisinghani and Adil Kalyanpur are in the main draw (Nice to see Adil getting back to court, with an injury protected ranking)...

The qualies are underway and Q2 and Q3 are being done today. 21 Indians were there in the qualies, and 6 have reached Q3 in after two rounds. 8th seed Parth Aggarwal plays 9th seed Sai Karteek Ganta in a Q3, so at least one more Indian will be there. 6th seed Kabir Hans, Yash Chaurasia (who just upset the 2nd seed Mattcombe), Dharmil Shah (who upset 3rd seed Okamura),and Neema Arthav are the others in the Q3.

So there should be around 10 to 12 Indians in the main draw by tomorrow.

Nope, Dev was there in the original entry list but with his earlier ranking of 1377 which is has risen now to 1152 only last week. Good that he got a wild card avoiding to play 3 extra matches.

So, he was moved out from the qualifying list to main draw with a wildcard. Got it.

Parth Aggarwal and Hans Kabir qualified in today to make it 11 Indians in the main draw. The first round doubles were the only main draw matches today, and 4 Indian teams and another Indian have reached the QFs. The 4 teams play each other, so at least two Indian teams will be in the semis from the upper and lower halves.

Except for Kabir Hans, it is a pretty nice draw for Indians. In the first round on Wednesday:

[R1] Siddhant Banthia (IND,1052) d. Ben Weintraub (ISR,1294), 67(5) 63 64
[R1] Chirag Duhan (IND,1161) d. (WC) Yabets Kebede (ETH,NR), 62 61
[R1] (PR) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,1499) d. (Q) Filippo Alberti (ITA,1870), 16 64 64
[R1] (5) Ishaque Eqbal (IND,848) d. Madhwin Kamath (IND,1172), 36 64 63
[R1] (WC) Dev Javia (IND,1152) d. Nitin Kumar Sinha (IND,1057), 2-1 RET.
[R1] (4) S D PrajwalDev (IND,669) d. (Q) Parth Agarwal (IND,1508), 63 62
[R1] (Q) Kabir Hans (IND,1488) d. (3) Philip Henning (RSA,526), 46 67(3)
[R1] Raghav Jaisinghani (IND,1241) l. (Q) Federico Valle (ITA,ITF-304), 76 46 57

[Scores updated above on Wednesday. Mod, Jay]

[QF] (4) S D Prajwal Dev (IND,669) l. (7) Luca Fantini (ITA,893), 76(4) 16 67(3)
[QF] (5) Ishaque Eqbal (IND,848) l. (3) Philip Henning (RSA,526), 67(2) 26

So, that is the end of that... Tough loss for SDPD after that 3 hr 15 min match :(

Unseeded Chirag Duhan and Maik Steiner (GER) who had upset the 4th seeded Italian pair in the QF, also upset the top seeds Sid B and Nitin Sinha 76(3) 63 just now, to reach the doubles final. 3rd seeds SDPD and Adil Kalyanpur lost 36 16 to the 2nd seeds Benjamin Lock and Courtney John Lock of Zimbabwe in the other semi. SDPD was on court for 4.5 hours today and got nothing for that...

This is Chirag's 4th M15 doubles final in the past 11 months. He had reached doubles finals in 3 weeks in a row at Monastir, Tunisia, with Garrett Jones (USA), Samir Banerjee (USA), Cengiz Aksu (TUR) last Aug-Sep. Chirag seems to be a good doubles player, though he won't be focusing on doubles for a few years, as he is only 20 now. He will move up inside top-800 in doubles soon.

At the M25 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (Hard):

Only one Indian (top seed Dev Javia) was seeded to make it through qualies this week at the W25 in Addis Ababa, but 9th seed Kabir Hans (IND,1488), who has been notably consistent in his matches for a while, upset the 6th seed Issei Okamura in straight sets and qualified in. 11th seed Parth Aggarwal, 14th seed Yash Yadav, Yash Chaurasia, made the Q3 round from 18 Indians in the qualies.

Including one wildcard and 2 qualifiers, we have 13 Indians in the main draw:

[R1] (4) Karan Singh (IND,625) vs Nitin Kumar Sinha (IND,1059)
[R1] (5) Siddharth Vishwakarma (IND,667) vs (Q) Patrik Oplustil (CZE)
[R1] (6) S D Prajwal Dev (IND,672) vs Luca Fantini (ITA,894)
[R1] (7) Ishaque Eqbal (IND,848) vs (Q) Edoardo Cherie Ligniere (ITA,1535)
[R1] Chirag Duhan (IND,1164) vs Toby Martin (GBR,1193)
[R1] Raghav Jaisinghani (IND,1243) vs Pablo Trochu (FRA,960)
[R1] (PR) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,1496) vs (WC) Kevin Cheruiyot (KEN,ITF-1852)
[R1] (WC) Arthav Neema (IND,NR) vs (Q) Giuseppe Tresca (ITA,2073)
[R1] (Q) Kabir Hans (IND,1488) vs (Q) Mattias Southcombe (GBR,1385)
[R1] (Q) Dev Javia (IND,1155) vs (3) Philip Henning (RSA,533)
[R1] Siddhant Banthia (IND,1055)vs (8) Maik Steiner (GER,854)
[R1] Madhwin Kamath (IND,1178) vs (1) Benjamin Lock (ZIM,353)

Hope at least 6 will make the second round.

In doubles at Addis Ababa, all 8 first round matches were done today, along with 8 final qualies matches (no main draw singles today). SidB/Nitin are the top seeds, Chira/Ishaque are 3rd, and SDPD/Adil are the 4th seeds. All 3 reached QFs today, along with Kabir/Karan, who now play Chriag/Ishaque. Raghav Jaisinhani and Sina Moghemi (IRI) beat Aditya Vshal and Madhvin, and will pllay SidB/Nitin next. At least one Indian team and one Indian will be in the semis.

Not a bad day today, as 8 Indians advanced to the R2 of the M25. Unfortunate loss for Dev who was so close to a big upset. I am upbeat on the young guy.

[R1] (4) Karan Singh (IND,625) d. Nitin Kumar Sinha (IND,1059), 63 63
[R1] (5) Siddharth Vishwakarma (IND,667) d. (Q) Patrik Oplustil (CZE), 60 57 64
[R1] (6) S D Prajwal Dev (IND,672) d. Luca Fantini (ITA,894), 4-1 RET.
[R1] (7) Ishaque Eqbal (IND,848) d. (Q) Edoardo Cherie Ligniere (ITA,1535), 75 63
[R1] Chirag Duhan (IND,1164) d. Toby Martin (GBR,1193), 3-0 RET.
[R1] Raghav Jaisinghani (IND,1243) d. Pablo Trochu (FRA,960), 36 76(3) 64
[R1] (PR) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,1496) d. (WC) Kevin Cheruiyot (KEN,ITF-1852), 60 62
[R1] (Q) Kabir Hans (IND,1488) d. (Q) Mattias Southcombe (GBR,1385), 76(3) 63
[R1] (WC) Arthav Neema (IND,NR) l. (Q) Giuseppe Tresca (ITA,2073), 36 16
[R1] (Q) Dev Javia (IND,1155) l. (3) Philip Henning (RSA,533), 76(7) 67(3) 26
[R1] Siddhant Banthia (IND,1055) l. (8) Maik Steiner (GER,854), 26 67(4)
[R1] Madhwin Kamath (IND,1178) l. (1) Benjamin Lock (ZIM,353), 67(9) 46

So, here are the Wednesday R2 matches:

[R2] (4) Karan Singh (IND,625) vs (Q) Kabir Hans (IND,1488)
[R2] (5) Siddharth Vishwakarma (IND,667) vs Raghav Jaisinghani (IND,1243)
[R2] (6) S D Prajwal Dev (IND,672) vs (PR) Adil Kalyanpur (IND,1496)
[R2] (7) Ishaque Eqbal (IND,848) vs Courtney John Lock (ZIM,1214)
[R2] Chirag Duhan (IND,1164) vs (1) Benjamin Lock (ZIM,353)

We are assured of three in the QFs, who will get 3 ATP point each. The winners of the 4th seed and 5th seed matches play an SF, so we are assured of one Indian in the SFs too.

Yes, Dev is looking better and better. I think he is playing at a 600-700 level right now and will reach that level in few months if he stays fit.

R1] Madhwin Kamath (IND,1178) l. (1) Benjamin Lock (ZIM,353), 67(9) 46

Also this score line looks impressive for 1178 ranked against the top seed and one who virtually lords over the ITF Futures circuit in Africa.
Last year the Zimbabwean created some record of sorts winning bucket full of Futures in Africa.

^^^ If only the youngster weren't facing lockup in India, and only had to face Lock in Ethiopia. Sad story. I had so much hopes on Madhvin :(
