Anything special about India? Fake news and social media amplification of fake news in a problem in many parts of the world.

Nothing specific per se. However, I believe about half or 40% of India uses WhatsApp, which is higher than many of the bigger countries, at least. On WhatsApp things are encrypted and the propagation of fake news is hard to detect and flag. Not that we are doing a great job in countries where fake news is sent out in public. But, WhatsApp seems to pose an almost intractable problem. And, where literacy is fledgling, digital literacy is perhaps harder to teach on a mass scale. It will perhaps organically happen but that will make it slower.
