WFI elections likely to be held within two weeks

The long-pending election of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) is likely to be held in the next two weeks. The Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that the returning officer (RO) is open to proceed with the WFI election by announcing the revised schedule. Given the observations by the Apex Court, RO MM Kumar, retired Chief Justice of the J&K High Court, has called a meeting with the ad-hoc committee members on Saturday afternoon.

Sad affair continues for Indian wrestling. Election results restore the old guard. Wrestlers cry foul and Sakshi quits.

Aman Sherawat won the title at ranking series in Zagreb, Croatia. He was very dominant and won all his bouts with technical superiority ( 10 point margin) . Aman looks more and more like a contender for medal at Paris.

Deepak Punia lost in the bronze medal match though.

This is a nice article about Aman's title -

Both Ravi and Bajrang did not even make it to the SF in trials. So, if they stick to the rules announced earlier, both our Tokyo olympic medalists would miss Paris Olympics.

This is the full team for freestyle of olympic qualifier-

FS

57kg Aman Sehrawat
65kg Sujeet Kalkal
74kg Jaideep
86kg Deepak Punia
97kg Deepak
125kg Sumit

Women's trials proved quite controversial with Vinesh Phogat being allowed to fight in two weight categories, 50kg and 53kg. Eventually, she won 50kg and finished third in 53kg. The debate was could any one be allowed to fight in two different weights as against the rules of UWW.
Vinesh Phogat was selected for 50kg. Antim Panghal having qualified from the World championships in 53kg that slot was not filled. It seems, Vinesh will get an opportunity later to fight Antim for the 53kg spot if she wanted to go for it.

^^^ It will be in our interest if Vinesh sticks to 50KG. In 50Kg, 3 Asian nations- Japan, China and Mongolia have already qualified. So, there will be a fair chance for Vinesh there to qualify and if she does that then she will likely to stick to 50 kg for Paris.

Asian Olympic qualifiers takes place for next 3 days in Kyrgyzstan.

Hope we get a quite a few quota places as we have only 1 qualifier so far. Just read the news though that 2 of our wrestlers - Deepak Punia ( who should have been 1 of the favorites for the quota) and Sujit are stuck in Dubai due to floods. :-(

Those 2 wrestlers - Deepak and Sujit were not allowed to compete being late for weigh-in due to delayed flight. And than we had only 1 wrestler - Aman Sherwat who reached semi final in a quota match but got thrashed by an Uzbek wrestler. So, no quota place still for our mens freestyle wrestlers with only 1 final world qualifying event left with 2 wrestlers per category. This coming in a sport which gave us 2 medals in last olympics is dismal.

Good news today from womens wrestling as 3 of them- Vinesh in 50 kg, Anshu in 57 kg and Ritika in 76 kgs won their SF bouts and got the quota place for olympics.

We now have 4 women wrestlers qualified for olympics with a chance to get 2 remaining quotas too at the last qualifying event but none in men.

Similar to boxing where we have 4 women boxers qualified but none in men so far.

Today ensured it wasn't a disastrous event for us. We might have small chances to get a Greco quota as well.

Aman's performance doesn't make me optimistic about the men though.

No quota in Greco Roman. Only Sunil Kumar won a round and lost in QF against Asian games champion from Uzbekistan.

Yes, mens freestyle is a worry. Do not see those 2 medals of last time getting repeated. Nobody has even qualified as yet. Need to make up for those in womens wrestling;

The WFI scandal has clearly handicapped our men wrestlers. Full credit to our women for still being quite good and they will have a chance to medal if they get decent draws.

Seems like WFI will hold fresh trials before the final Olympic qualifiers which is good.
