Congrats to Sumit for a wonderful achievement! Making the top hundred is a much rarer achievement for Indians since 1990 when the ATP tour started. In that window, only Leander, Yuki, Somdev, Prajnesh and now Sumit have reached that reached that level.

Both Yuki and Somdev were hindered by injuries. Otherwise they would’ve spent more time in the top hundred. Praj got there very late and Leander got into the top hundred at the age of 25-26, but then focused primarily on doubles where he had extraordinary success. So here’s hoping that Sumit has a long run inside the top hundred. :goodluck:

Wonderful of Sumit to climb the ranking with a well earned victory on home turf - cement I mean! Looks like Somdev is helping, at least court side. At the US Open he had a physio helping. A traveling coach would be nice. Hope to see more of him in person. Go Sumit!

He has a traveling coach now, and should hopefully able to afford it going forward. With Somdev mentoring him, he is in much better position than others in the past to go further up, if he has luck on the injury front.

Sumit has 41 points falling off this week. So, I think will need to go to SF or better this week in Bengaluru to stay in top 100.

Sumit is still #98 in the official rankings for the rest of the week. What you are looking at is live rankings which are projections based on current results in the week and will change based on the results of the week. As noted by Sameer in the post immediately above yours, his ranking will change the end of the week as he is losing the 41 points from the Chennai Challenger of last year. He should gain the points that he will win in Bangalore, and that will determine his ranking at the end of the week.

Yes, I was looking at the Live rankings, and thanks for the clarification on the points. So it seems that he will likely not drop out in the official rankings by next week.

Does anyone know what the target ranking is and by what date for direct entry into the FO?

^^^ Date for direct entry for French open would be 6 weeks before the tournament i.e 15th April and cut-off varies between 98-105 or so. But, usually top 100 is safe.

Current top 100 cut-off is at 606 points. It keeps varying and if we may consider say 610-615 as safe points for top 100. As of now, Sumit has 589 points in live rankings with 18 more points to defend before cut-off date. So, needs about 40-45 to remain in top 100. A final this week at Bengaluru or SF in both Bengaluru and Pune Challenger would do it. And even if not, he has enough tournaments after that ( Dubai, IW, Miami, a couple more) where he can earn points.

Ideally he should be gunning for a top 90....given so few points to defend, home tournaments and many more to going ahead. Most of our players had just a year or two of good results. This is his time. Take each match at a time, but aim to go higher.

Hope Sumit does really well in the next 2 challengers in India to get his ranking solidly into the 90s. He is doing very well at the challenger level (and also at the AO qualies which is similar to a high level challenger).

His victory over Bublik at the AO gives me hope that he can also win at the ATP level with his current game once he starts getting into ATP draws more regularly. His prior record at ATP main draws in quite poor (something like 2-10 in my quick check and he at 2-4 in GS main draws). So, winning regularly in ATP main draws in the next challenge for him to overcome.

Not trying to think too far ahead, but what happens if Sumit has a deep run at Pune CH? Does he get SE at Dubai or does he have to miss the tournament since he won't make it in time for qualies?

In general, I don't believe you can get a SE into a higher level event because you are playing at a lower level event while the qualies have started at the higher level event.

Check out section 7.10 of the ATP rule book on their website as there are some nuances to it. For example to get into a ATP Masters 1000 via SE, you could be playing at an ATP 500 event in addition to another ATP 1000 or GS event.

For now, if he wins Bangalore, he will get to about 85-90.

So, live ranking 101, close to his personal best of 98. He really need to win some later rounds in challengers to make significant leaps now. Don't know if he will play next week but if he does, hope he goes all the way.
