Re: Australian Open 2024
First upset of a seed by an Indian in 35 years at a grand slam (as discussed with Vatsal at the ITD whatsapp group). We think RK's win over Wilander in 1989 at the AO was the last one. It is a monumental win. Of "Bublikal" proportions

Re: Australian Open 2024
Wow…what a win by Sumit.
Dominated the first 2 sets and did just enough in set 3.
Got broken when serving for the Match and it looked the momentum could shift.
But, in the tie breaker he just held on and was helped by Bulbik double faulting twice to give Sumit the 2 free points he needed to close out the match!!

Re: Australian Open 2024
Credit also to the 15% or so of the Indians in the crowd who were quite vocal and perhaps helped Sumit when his energy was flagging a bit towards the end of the 3rd set. Bublik had slightly more vocal support but each “let’s go Sasha” was met with a “let’s go Sumit” chant.

Re: Australian Open 2024
He will probably face Mackenzie McDonald (#42) in the next round who is suffering from poor form. Nagal can make it to R3. Lets' go!!!!!

Re: Australian Open 2024
Meanwhile Yuki Bhambri double faults his way to lose the first round doubles after winning the first set quite comprehensively. 6-1 6-7(8) 6-7(7).

Re: Australian Open 2024
Yes, they missed 3 matchpoints with opponent serving at 4-5, 0-40 in third set and also missed couple of match points in second set tie break.
Opportunity missed by them. Yuki really needs to start winning matches in grand slams if he has to make progress inside top 50 and more.

Re: Australian Open 2024
In the meantime, Bublik withdraws from his doubles match and Balaji gets in as alternate along with Vlad Cornea.
