2023 FIDE Grand Swiss brings grand expectations


The strongest Swiss event of the year is around the corner. In the scenic Isle of Man, the first round starts on 25 October and in the next 12 days we will witness a magnificent chess spectacle full of fierce battles. The Grand Swiss is a pivotal part of the FIDE World Championship cycle.

The list of favourites includes Fabiano Caruana, who already has qualified for Toronto from the World Cup in Baku, Hikaru Nakamura, who will seek a return to the Candidates that went so well for him (except for the last round) last year in Madrid, Alireza Firouzja, the winner of the previous Grand Swiss in Riga 2021, Anish Giri, who desperately wants another shot at the title after his last Candidates appearance in 2020/21 in Yekaterinburg, Gukesh D, who at 17 entered the top 10 and became India’s number one after 37 years of Anand’s domination. These are only the top five on the starting list, but you should check the full list and pick your favourites, though you’ll have a hard time with such a wide choice!

FIDE Grand Swiss: Arjun Downs Guijarro; Narayanan holds Nodirbek


Playing his trademark uncompromising chess, Grandmaster Arjun Erigaise scored a thumping victory over Anton Guijarro of Spain while S L Narayanan did well to hold GM Abdusattorov Nodirbek to a draw in the second round of FIDE Grand Swiss here.
Raunak Sadhwani continued with his solid performance after holding fourth seed Anish Giri of Holland in round one. Raunak played out another draw with pre-event favourite Hikaru Nakamura of the United States

Vidit is in sole first lead after round 7 of 11. Arjun has been playing well but hasn’t been able to convert and is 0.5 points behind in a tie for 2nd.

Top-2 qualify for Candidates. Both Vidit and Arjun had heartbreaking losses in the WC when they were very close to a qualification spot.

Vaishali is in a tie for 1st amongst the women.

I have no hope on Vidit. He will mess up in the last 2 round and end up out of race for top 2 position !!!! Arjun is the guy who has some chance to qualify for Candidates!!!!!

Grand Swiss 2023 R9: Vaishali beats Stefanova, emerges sole leader


IM Vaishali R defeated GM Antoaneta Stefanova (BUL) in the ninth round of FIDE Grand Swiss 2023 Women. The former Women's world champion made an incorrect exchange of pieces in the endgame which eased Vaishali's path towards victory. Her coleader GM Anna Muzychuk (UKR) was held to a draw by IM Leya Garifullina, allowing Vaishali to become the sole leader 7/9. 

GM Vidit Gujrathi had a well contested draw against GM Andrey Esipenko. The leader group in the Open section increased to six players.

Congrats Vaishali on qualifying for the Women Candidates with a round to spare.

If she draws tomorrow, she will win the Grand Swiss tournament. If she wins tomorrow, she will hit 2500 and will become a GM.

Vidit is tied-1st but 3rd on tiebreaks going into the final round. Needs to win tomorrow to finish top-2 and qualify, it will be heartbreaking if he missed out twice this year on the final hurdle. Arjun is T-4 but 5th on tiebreaks - needs to win and hope the top boards lose.

Just got to know that Vaishali is sister of Praggu who reached world cup final earlier in the year. Looks to be a great Chess playing family.

Vidit not only won the last round, he also won the tournament. This is the biggest tournament win for an Indian chess player not named Anand.

What a day for Indian chess with Vaishali drawing her last round to win the Women's section, she just missed out on 2500 rating which would give her the GM title.

Vidit and Pragg in the Candidates (candidates is an open tournament for men and women).

Vaishali and likely Koneru qualifying to the Women's candidates.

This is a great time to be an Indian chess fan.
