Pranav Karthik and Suhitha Maruri going for back to back titles. At 17 and 16, both appear little older for J4 level title winners to get excited about but still winning 9-10 matches in 2 weeks is not easy. So will keep an eye on them irrespective of result tomorrow.

^^^ Yes, nothing much to get too excited about. The only real young one was Kriish Tyagi who is only 15 (but then he looks really tall for 15 in his pictures and makes me go "hmmm")... The other one to keep an eye on, may be Rishitha Reddy Basireddy, who is only 14. She had won back to back J5s in Colombo in July. She didn't do too well in these two events (R2 and QF, losing to Sonal and Suhitha) but she took Suhitha to three sets yesterday. Harshini Nagaraj too. She is 15 but showed some spark in these J4s. Anyway, a fairly unexciting pair of events, overall.

At the Hyderabad J4,

[F] (4) Kriish Tyagi -15 (IND,421) d. (6) Pranav Karthik -17 (IND,455), 63 63
[F] (1) Suhitha Maruri -16 (IND,162) d. (4) Ruma Gaikaiwari (IND) -16 (IND,475), 62 61

One-sided affairs, I guess. Kriish took revenge for his SF loss to Pranav last week.

If he is a legit 15 year old, Krish Tyagi looks a good prospect. He will move up to around 325-330 in the ITF junior rankings now. He is the second best Indian among 2007 borns after Manas Dhamne. If you consider those born after 2006, he is fourth best after Rushil, Manas and slightly below Bushan Haobam.

We can have a pretty strong junior davis cup team in world finals in October if both Manas and Krish are considered for the team along with Rushil and Bushan who were there in the Asia Oceania qualifying.

Another 3 week swing begins in Indian circuit starting with J4 in Guwahati this week, J4 in New Delhi next week and J3 in Pune in the week after.

This week boys final will be between third seed 15 year old Krish Tyagi and second seed 17 year old Indian American Hanu Patel. Krish upset second seed Indian American Ayush Bhat in the SF in 3 sets while Hanu beat a Swiss player who had upset top seed Aman Dahiya in second round.

Girls final will be between top seed 17 year old Sonal Patil and second seeded French girl.

Kriish is looking good. Nice comeback win over Aayush. I noticed a 13 year old, Prisha Nikhil Shinde, reaching the semifinals. Pune girl. She was in the top-6 of Indian u12 rankings earlier this year before turning 13. She beat a 16 year old 7th seed and a 17 year old 3rd seed, on the way to the semifinal. She had only played two junior ITF events before this (QF in a J4 and SF in a J5 in Mauritius). Good start on ITF juniors by Prisha.

Another comeback win for Kriish Tyagi (3rd seed), as he beat Hanu Patel of USA (4th seed), 46 64 60, to take the title at the Guwahati J4.

On the girls' side, top seed Sonal Patel lost cheaply, 46 06 in the final.

The J4 in Delhi is coming along nicely. Seven Indians including top see Kriish Tyago are in the QFs, along with the 2nd seed Hanu Patel (USA). The nice story so far is yet another 2007-batch kid (behind Manas, Kriish and Retin) coming along. Kandhavel Mahalingam, who is turning 15 next month upset the 5th seed Aleksander Daskalovich of Serbia in easy straight sets to make the QF. He was in the domestic u14 top-5 late last year and has only played a few ITF events so far.

On the girls' side, Top seed Sonal (who at 17 is relatively old for J4 at this time), talented 14 year old 5th seed Rishitha Reddy Basireddy, and a surprising qualifier, Nemha Sarah Kispotta, whom I know nothing about (but upset the third seeded Thai), are the three Indians in the QFs. Two American-Indians, a French, a Thai and a Mexcian are also in the QFs. Hope Rishitha can upset the 2nd seeded Thai. One player that I was hoping to see do well, Harshini nagaraj (who did well at Chennai and Hyderabad J4s earlier) has not done too well in these two events.

A bit off topic..so mods feel free to delete.

Hanu is originally from US but has been living and training at Alex Waske in Germany since 2014. I am not sure if he’s still there though. We met them in 2016 when my boys did a camp there in summer.

Waske’s academy in Ahmedabad (Altevol) was his dad (and uncle’s) idea and and I believe he owns 50%. Things could have changed though since the pandemic started.

Link from 2019..not really sure what the current ownership structure is though..the pandemic changed a lot of things everywhere…

^^^ Thanks Gautam. Yeah, I notice a couple of US-born kids like Hanu, Aayush, etc who seem to be always there in India. There was another one, that I forget the name of. Also, have been hearing about Altevol, and it does seem like the academy has been helping. We need a few more of these academies in India. Even if the good foreign coaches are not always there to teach and train the kids, it helps in interactions, talent-scouting, etc - and in general level of knowledge among Indian parents. The kind of thing AITA should be coordinating but probably aren't doing much about.

Waske Academy is the one place that actually has improved a few Indian guys' tennis (unlike IMG, Bollitieri and other places)

Another one from 1997 batch, Hitesh Chauhan ( who also turns 15 next month) beat Kandhavel Mahalingam in 3 sets to reach SF. He will meet Krish in the SF. Other SF is between 17 years olds Deep Munim and Hanu Patel.

Really good batch of juniors coming up from 1997- hopefully 2-3 of them will get to grand slam juniors level by 2024 ( of course best among them Manas is already there.

Among girls, Rishita did upset the second seeded Thai in straight sets to make it to SF. Top seed Sonal Patil is the other Indian to make the SF apart from American-Indian Saina Deshpande and fourth seeded French girl.

So, it is another Kriish vs Hanu final today at the Delhi J4. Also, another Sonal vs Margot final on the girls' side too. HHoping for at least one Indian title, like last week.
