36th National Games - Gujarat

Post by jayakris »

Looks like we will finally have our National Games again after a 7 year break since the 2015 edition in Kerala. Just to remind everybody, the last ones were #32 in Hyderabad (2002), #32 Guwahati (2007), #34 Jharkhand (2011), and #35 Kerala (2015). Goa was supposed to do it in 2019/20 but after delays and Covid, they couldn't. It was only a month ago that Goa finally said, after first saying they could do it next year and all that, that they can do it in December -- but not in September like IOA wanted. So the Goa Games got officially cancelled, but controversially (politics!), Gujarat picked up the #36 National Games, and they will conduct it with 2.5 months notice. The MOU with IOA was signed 3 weeks ago, and we are set to go in late September. Bravo, Gujarat!

Gujarat to host 36th National Games from Sept 27 to Oct 10

By the way, the 2002 National Games was the very first discussion thread in the forum, almost 20 years ago in December 2002! ... Are we patriotic or what? :)

Our threads:

National Games #32 - Hyderabad 2002
National Games #33 - Guwahati 2007
National Games #34 - Jharkhand (Ranchi) 2011
National Games #35 - Kerala 2015

Yogasana and Mallakhamb will be new events entering the National Games. Here are the International Olympic Association page on the rules of two sports - Yogasana and Mallakhamb.

So, Gujarat is taking over everything in India, now sports too. ;)

But on a serious note, they are not able to produce too many sportsmen still. Do not recall seeing anyone from Gujarat in recent CWG medalists.

The para TT medal winners were from Gujarat

Right now the India cricket team has quite a few from Gujarat. Captain Pandya, Sir Jadeja, Pujara and so on. Even Bumrah represents Gujarat.

They also have the largest cricket stadium in the world where an ex-US president was felicitated.

I don't mind individual states pushing on one or more sports. Chess for example has had a boom in TN, badminton in AP/Karnataka and obviously Haryana in all the Olympic sports (would probably guess Haryana is half of our Olympic medals over the past 20 years).

I like this idea of yoga as a sport. If break dancing can be made an Olympic sport, why not yoga as well?

We had a discussion on this in the Ankita Raina thread a little while ago. Ankita is pretty much the only one outside of the cricketers (and even many of them like the Mankads were Mumabai Gujaratis, who didn't come up from Gujarat itself, like Ankita)

The National Games are underway. Officially today, I think, but some events have started a couple of days earlier too.

Here is the website - https://nationalgamesgujarat.in

National games have been declared open by Modi to much fanfare. Between is it just me or there others who think the national games logo has been designed/fashioned after Modi, the resemblance of lion's beard to Mod's doesn't seem to be coincidence :p. Checkout videolink below of his march in the stadium along with logo.He also raises his left hand just like the logo.

In tennis, Maharashtra team are thru to both mens and womens final.

Mens team beat Karnataka 2-1 in the SF. Manas Dhamne is playing the team event and he beat Adil Kalyanpur in 3 sets which is quite a good win for a 14 year old. Then, SD Prajwal Dev won in straight sets against Arjun Kadhe in straight sets. In doubles Arjun and Anvit Bendre beat Prajwal Dev and Adil in 3 sets to win it for Maharashtra. In other SF, Services beat Delhi 2-0 with wins for Faisal Qamar and Isaque Eqbal. So, final between Maharashtra and Services.

Womens team final will be between Maharashtra and Gujarat. Rutuja and Vaishnavi Adkar playing for Maharashtra who beat Tamil Nadu in the final. Ankita Raina and Vaidehi Chaudhary playing for Gujarat who beat Karnataka in the SF.

Also Harmeet Desai in regular TT. Raj Bhavsar is probably the most accomplished "Gujarat" origin athlete.
"Raj, who is on a 10-day trip of India, wants to help Indian gymnasts achieve glory in the Commonwealth Games."

Manas Dhamne seems to be taking quite a step up. After seemingly struggling on the junior tour earlier this year, he won the Asian junior B1 title and now beating Adil Kalyanpur (an ATP top 1000 player) is a very strong result. The fact that he is doing this at 14 years old is very promising. Hopefully, he will be our next ATP level player in a few years....

With that 8.26M Aldrin also qualified for next year's world championships. Sreeshankar has already qualfied. So, we have good crop in mens long jump now and as in mens triple jump.

In mens shot put, Tejinder Pal Toor won gold with a 20.75M which is a leading mark in Asia this year. Chance to repeat his Asian games gold next year.

A 8 year old national record was broken in womens pole vault by Rosy Meena Paulral from Tamil Nadu when she jumped 4.20M. Bronze at last Asian games went at 4.20. So, there may be a chance for a bronze at Asiad if Rosy keeps it up or improves.

In womens 100M, Jyothi Yarraji won gold beating Hima Das and Dutte Chand in the final with a timing of 11.51 sec. Will need to improve a lot though for a medal at Asiad.
