And Peyton won, so it is

[QF] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,382) vs (Q) Peyton Stearns (USA,423)

This won't be easy, so Karman needs to "bring it"!

Karman did not 'bring it' today :(

[QF] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,382) l. (Q) Peyton Stearns (USA,423), 36 16

Karman had 9 aces and 4 DFs, while Peyton had only 1 ace and no DFs. Karman won only 37 points to 63 by Peyton when the ball was in play. That is really poor. Against top college tennis products, you had better be ready to spar and win rallies. That is what they are all good at. Karman needs to develop the rest of her game; she can't win just with the serve.

It should be noted that this match was played indoors while the previous rounds were outdoors. Peyton clearly had an advantage having played a ton of matches indoors considering most of the college tennis ties happen in that setup. Karman has made the cut-off for the qualifying draw at next week’s W100 in Landsville, Philadelphia.

Pretty bad 26 36 loss for Karman in Landsville Q1 against Jessy Rompies who is ranked 1200+. :-(

Not sure what happened there.

Karman is playing the Granby WTA 250 and is seeded 7th in the qualifying draw. She will face Canadian Cadence Brace in the opening round. Cadence produced an upset win this week at the Vancouver WTA 125 event against #3 seed Claire Liu (#79). So, this should be an interesting match. Hope Karman wins :goodluck:

At WTA250 Granby, Canada

[Q1] (7) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,363) l. (wc) Cadence Brace (CAN,742), 36 62 26

Sad. That is a 17 year old old kid that Karman just lost to. I don't know what is going wrong with Karman these days :(

FWIW, Cadence Brace is on a surge having qualified into the main draw and taken out #70 (Kaja Juvan) in the first round. So, Karman's loss looks more explainable in that context.

With her Chennai WTA points updated, Karman is India #1 in WTA singles rankings this week at #322 with Ankita down to #329. This is the third time Karman has risen to India #1 in last 5 years. But, in both those occasions back in November 2017 and December 2018, Ankita snatched back the #1 spot within 1 week with good performances in subsequent weeks. And the same thing happens for the third time, as with her qualifying into main draw at Korea Open WTA, Ankita will get back to India #1 next Monday. Hope this competition between the 2 of them continue and it spurs them to get back to their earlier top 200 level. Currently, their competition for #1 is a ranking level below 300 which is not pleasant to see.

To me when both players are ranked below 300, no 1 or 2 doesn't matter. Ankita has been on an down hill and looks liked she peaked pre covid. Karman is plagued by injuries, else she would have been in top 200. They have different battles to fight. I still find Karman a superior player vs Ankita. Beyond a graceful forehand, Ankita couldn't develop any other aspect of her game. Yet, i find it commendable that she broke into top 200 and stayed there. If she wants to come back to top 200, her game has to improve. Karman looks more promising but can slip into Yuki mode of she doesn't take care of her health.

Karman is in US and will be playing at W25 in Redding, California next week. With her improved ranking, could just about be 8th seed here ( not checked how ranking of others have moved from entry list).

Then, she will be in W25 in Fredericton, Canada where she will be a seed.

Then, she should be in US or Canada for next couple of weeks too. Hope she builds on her success at Chennai.

^^ Karman did become the 8th seed as you guuessed. Playing a 17 year old wildcard, Qavia Lopez (USA,1239) in the R1... Qavia is 22 in ITF junior rankings, so must be talented but probably not in Karman's league yet, I suppose.

At the W25 in Redding, California USA, Karman won the first round 61 61... R2 is on Thursday and the opponent is TBD on Wednesday.

Wednesday update: A qualifier Lisa Zaar (SWE,623) is the R2 opponent. She is a pretty good player, whose ranking is all from 2 months of tennis recently (including two M25 semis in Europe), as she was in US college tennis and graduated from Pepperdine university in southern Salifornia. She finished in the quarterfinals of collegiate tennis championships and was ranked in the top-20 in college. Karman would be tough for her to upset.

Karman overcame a set and a 1-4 deficit to move to QF at Redding W25.

W25 Redding, CA ITF

R2 [8] Karman Thandi (321) 3-6 7-6 6-1 Lisa Zaar (SWE, 623)

Most likely to lock horns with the 2nd seed Kayla Day next. :goodluck:
