ITF W25 Gurgaon, India -June 20-July 3, 2022

Post by sameerph »

2 weeks W25 tournaments taking place these 2 weeks in Gurgaon giving good opportunity for Indian players to play at home after some time.

Today first round got completed and big upset was Vaidehi Chaudhari upsetting India #1 Ankita Raina.

First round results-

(1) Diana Marcinkevica (LAT) d. Akanksha Dileep Nitture (IND) 60 64
(Q) Mansi Vadyala (USA) d. (wc) Ananyaa Bhargava (IND) 64 64
Sofia Costoulas (BEL) d. (Q) Ikumi Yamazaki (JPN) 75 63
(6) Ekaterina Yashina d. (wc) Vanshika Choudhary (IND) 61 64

(4) Viktoria Morvayova (SVK) d. Gozal Ainitdinova (KAZ) 43 ret.
Saki Imamura (JPN) d. (wc) Smriti Bhasin (IND) 46 62 63
Anna Ukolova d. (Q) Nidhi Chilumula (IND) 64 60
Momoko Kobori (JPN) d. (5) Luksika Kumkhum (THA) 63 67(3) 20 ret.

(8) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND) d. Sahaja Yamalapalli (IND) 63 46 64
Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND) d. (Q) Elena Pridankina 26 76(6) 63
Humera Baharmus (IND) d. (wc)Mihika Yadav (IND) 26 75 63
Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND) d. (3) Ankita Raina (IND) 76(7) 63

(7) Misaki Matsuda (JPN) d. Priska Madelyn Nugroho (INA) 62 64
Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty (IND) d. (Q) Kundali Majgaine (IND) 62 61
Punnin Kovapitukted (THA) d. Zeel Desai (IND) 46 63 76(2)
(Q) Vineetha Mummadi (IND) d. (2) Peangtarn Plipuech (THA) 16 63 ret.

Apart from third seeded Ankita, second seeded Plipuech and fifth seed Lumkhum also got knocked out. So, good chance for someone else to take advantage. Can an Indian player do so ? But, our #1 Ankita is out and #2 Rutuja is not playing here ( not sure why). So, it is upto other Indians to rise up to the ocassion.

Her performance post-covid has been poor. She may not be back to 100% -- some take longer to recover. Also, Vaidehi has improved over the past year.

Tons of Telugu girls showed up in qualifying. This is good. What is going on? @gbelday Any insights as to some good coaches showing up in Hyderabad?

Second Round

(1) Diana Marcinkevica (LAT) d. (Q)Mansi Vadyala (USA) 62 60
Sofia Costoulas (BEL) d. (6) Ekaterina Yashina 67(5) 61 75

Saki Imamura (JPN) d. (4) Viktoria Morvayova (SVK) 64 75
Anna Ukolova (RUS) d. Momoko Kobori (JPN) 62 64

(8) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND) d. Sowjanya Bavisetti (IND) 63 62
Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND) d. Humera Baharmus (IND) 75 63

Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty (IND) d. (7) Misaki Matsuda (JPN) 62 16 64
Punnin Kovapitukted (THA) d. (Q) Vineetha Mummadi (IND) 76(4) 61

So, 3 Indians are in QF with 20 year old Shrivalli coming up with a very good upset win over 7th seeded Japanese. If Shrivalli can beat the Thai Punnin against whom she has a 1-4 head to head record, we will have 1 Indian finalist assured.

Just two seeds remain in the last eight! Karman vs Vaidehi should be a good one.

How easy—I see it in Indian tournaments far too often that the draw miraculously pits foreigners and Indians against each other. The probability of this happening with such regularity has to be very low. Anyone else noticed this over the years?

Interesting conspiracy theory here!

At least for this tournament, it does not make sense. In the first round, there are 16 Indians and 16 foreigners and the matchups are 8 Indians playing each other with the other 8 playing foreigners which is statistically quite a likely probability. That is, the complete outliers would be all Indians playing each other or all Indians playing foreigners while the exact middle is a relatively higher probability result.

I’m talking about the second round. However, it is far too often if you look back in any round of all tournaments hosted in India.

QF results-

Sofia Costoulas (BEL) d. (1)Diana Marcinkevica (LAT) 64 64
Saki Imamura (JPN) d. Anna Ukolova 62 36 64

(8) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND) d. Vaidehi Chaudhari (IND) 63 64
Punnin Kovapitukted (THA) d. Shrivalli Rashmikaa Bhamidipaty (IND) 21 ret.

Shrivalli had to retire early in her match due to illness it seems. So, Karman is the only Indian in SF. Hope she can go all the way.

Karman is thru to the final with another easy win.

SF results-

[SF] (8) Karman Kaur Thandi (IND,497) d. Punnin Kovapitukted(THA,699) 62 63

[SF] Sofia Costoulas (BEL,709) d. Saki Imamura (JPN,830) 62 64

Except for the first round where Sahaja Yamlapalli had streched her, Karman had it easy. But, now she faces a tough one in the final against 17 year old Belgian Costoulas who is current junior world #3 and was a finalist at Australian open in January and has won 4 more Grade 1/ Grade A titles this year.

Finally, we get a singles title! Congratulations Karman. She needs to buy Vaidehi some ice cream for knocking out Ankita. ;-)

Talking about ice cream reminded me of this from yesterday:

Ankita is not playing well. Anyone would have knocked her out. Karman would have beaten her too.

No need for an ice cream gift.
