ATP tournaments in Australia (pre-AO), January 2022

Post by PKBasu »

There are a couple of ATP events in Australia in the first week of 2022 -- ATP250s in Melbourne and Adelaide. I believe there is a second week of action in Adelaide.

Bopanna/Ramanathan are pairing up for the first ATP250 in Adelaide next week. Ramkumar may also be in the singles qualifiers (he is 2 out from the qualifying entry list at the moment).

Yuki Bhambri and Michael Venus are in the doubles main draw at the Melbourne ATP250, starting 2nd January.

There are total of 3 WC's up for grabs , 1 in the MD & 2 in the Quali Draw. Mel Purcel the Australian one spot above Ram would surely get one of the WC's, leaving Ram tantalisingly one spot away to make the Quali Draw , need one more withdrawal for Ram to make it to the Quali Draw.

Ram makes the cut for the Quali Singles draw and for the Dbls MD with a combined ranking of 186 with Rohan might even be seeded.

This is great. Hope RamK is able to qualify and the RamK/bops pair does well in the doubles. This will impact both of them being able to come to the Dallas Open where I’m eagerly waiting to see them both play!

Tough R1 for Ram, #103 and the 2nd seed Holger Rune.
Let's see how things turn out

Divij Sharan is playing in the Traralgon Challenger.

Singles:

FQR [4] Divij Sharan (UNR) v [6] Patrick Fitzgerald (AUS, UNR)

Doubles:

R1 [2] Christopher Rungkat (INA,147)/ Divij Sharan (119) v Nikola Kuhn (SPA, 928)/Timofey Skatov (KAZ,746)

Good luck to Divij for a successful 2022 and to get back to the top-80 rankings.

I remember from my earlier tennis playing days about Adelaide - it has an elevation of 2385 ft which is not far from Bangalore elevation of 3018 ft. Elevation matters because if you are not acclimatized you will be erroring out a lot. Adelaide is very similar to Bangalore in this regard. If RamK remembers the similarity to Bangalore and adjusts accordingly, he may come out ahead.

After losing S1, Ram squandered a golden opportunity to level the scores at 1 set all.
Led by a monster 5 - 0 lead in the 2nd set TB, and even had 4 SP's ,but wasted all of them and went on to lose the S2 and the match 46 67 :damn: :damn: :damn: :damn:

Sad to hear. Not a great way to start the year. He gets no sympathies from me.

Mental issues are similar to physical issues. I hope he gets the support and works out his mental issues. Sometimes it may be to play more and more such matches or play simulated situations and preparing for it. Some never get it in the life despite trying, others overcome choking issues. Good luck!

As prof said, it is possible to get tired faster due to elevation. I faced it acutely while climbing Mt. Kenya last month over 4000m. I suppose in tennis, which may require more physical bursts, you face early tiredness at 3k. So maybe he did not have much left. Whatever it is, maybe a chat with someone like Somdev would be good. He had the mental part pat down.

At the Melbourne ATP 250, Yuki and Mike Venus starts against Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, Italian Andrea Vavassori pair. Tallon won 8 ATP challenger titles in 2021 and hence moved to a career high ranking of 65 in the singles chart. Good luck to our pair.

[Q1] Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND, 184) l. 2-Holger Rune (DEN, 103) 46 67(7)

He had his chances at 5-0 in the 2nd set TB, and then 6-2, but couldn't convert. Ramkumar had a terrific, long winning streak in tiebreakers until about 3 months ago, but has since been succumbing strangely to nerves in TBs. Needs to address this quickly!

In doubles, Rohan/Ramkumar play James Cerretani (USA)/Fernando Romboli (BRA) in R1. Definitely winnable!
