Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
Saw the match, 52 minute BD missed an open goal, our Gurpreet was just watching helplessly , even with 10 men BD looked more of an attacking outfit.
Lucky to escape with a draw.

Poor scoreline. If we can't beat BD,.then we haven't improved at all

And, we cannot get by Nepal or scrape by them. Same old.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
Our player quality is awful. Somehow, our WR is at #107 which speaks well to our coaching and defensive style of play but it is pretty clear that our player quality is right there with the likes of Nepal, BD, Maldives etc. Given that soccer/football is reasonably popular in at least parts of India and we have a professional league, it's a mystery why we don't produce players of better quality especially in the skill positions in the midfield and offense.

I didn't particularly like the team selection. Lots of names that I wasn't aware were the best we had. Not sure what is going on. Maybe the guys like Prannoy Halder whom Stimac dropped were better? Udanta was back, I think. Anyway, nothing will work unless we come up with somebody (anybody!) who can score a goal. Some 15 years and counting, and we have produced ONE player who can score. It is still Chhetri or bust for getting a goal.

And we couldn't even beat Sri Lanka. 0-0 tie. I think Stimac won't survive this week. He has been a disaster.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
The only charitable explanation is that Stimac is experimenting. I hope he told his bosses about that and have them on board. There is no particular reason why we are a nobody even in the SAF games in football.

^^ We aren't nobodies. We do have the players to be winning SAF easily. Not sure if Stimac has identified the right guys and have them prepared right. I don't think he has taken AIFF in confidence or anything. AIFF is probably pretty mad by now and is getting ready to can him. Will be well-deserved. Too many bad matches under him so far.

We huffed, we puffed, we whiffed, and finally Chhetri came through in the 83rd minute, for a 1-0 win over Nepal. Jeez. We have maldives coming up, and I don't know if we can beat them on current form.
We need to beat Maldives and get full 3 points to make the final.

The way this series has been played, it looks like four teams who play as bad while Sri Lanka is slightly worse. We couldn't beat SL hence only slightly worse. Maldives beat SL and Bangladesh, while lost to Nepal. So I don't know how good we are here.

Maybe for this tournament, they should move the goalposts to make a bigger goal.

Re: Football: Indian National Team news ...
81st minute, India leads 3-1 over Maldives. Finally some scores. 2 by the man known as "who else" these days, and one by Manvir.
Looks like Coach Stimac got two yellows for incessantly complaining from the sidelines, and he has been sent off! Now I wonder if he will miss the final. Haha, he is not making any friends. After the last match, the Nepal coach was all over Stimac in the post-game press conference for apparently doing too much celebrations when Chhettri scored that important late goal. Stimac was doing some dance moves, it seems. Now the referee got upset at Stimac for whining too much.
Anyway, India won 3-1 and made the final. Manvir scored in the 33rd minute but Maldives equalized at the 45th minute on a PK, after Preetam pulled somebody down.. Then Chhetri scored in the 62nd and 71st minutes to take us into the final.
The final will be against Nepal at 8:30 pm IST on the Oct 16th Saturday.
