Ashwin has lost his batting skills a touch. Except for the famous inning in Sydney, he has not done well with the bat. He is a #8 now. The problem is that Jadeja is injured and Axar was not that great in I1. Hoping that was just a one inning fluke.
Actually Ashwin played reasonably in the first innings of first test! Did not watch the other matches, but his dismissals have been too soft! Even in the Australia test matches, apart from Adelaide he looked in good touch, but just gave away his wicket! He need to put a premium for his wicket ! At the very least he needs to stay 10+ overs ! And need to make it count when is settled!! The first test match, with sundar in sublime form, if Ashwin had sticked thru lunch session,India may have drawn that match! There is lot more weight on him to perform as a bowler and I think he has let his bat tail off trying to focus on the bowling

Do we know what kind of pitch is expected in Ahmedabad? For some reason, I keep thinking of the dust bowls!

Yes, this is true. He has focused more on his bowling and naturally his batting has tailed off. Yes, there have been many soft dismissals. And, that is why perhaps when he cut out the risks, he was up to the task in Sydney.

The modern #8 must be able to make at least 15 runs/innings with 20 being preferred. Ashwin has given us about 10.

Bangladesh, Pakistan, RSA, England, Aus, NZ have very good bats at #8. England has 3! And all of them have been better than Ashwin in the last two years. Only WI is worse than us. But, they are fixing that with Alzari Joseph, who can bat. Some of these players have batted below #8 mostly especially those in the lower part of the table.

Bhuvi played 4 T20s for UP last month. So he may be just as fit as Ishant (although Bhuvi remains much more likely to break down, given his Yuki-like record of injuries through his stop-start career). He would potentially be a game-changer in the day/night test at Motera (Ahmedabad) which begins on 24th February. And he would strengthen the batting too.

If someone breaks down, they break down. It has happened to people when we thought they were fine. Umesh, Shami, Saini. Etc. Ishant. So, why punish him only. He will be great in a day-night test. Let's get him.

Unless we have serious plans a la Australia, our pacers will break down. Even theirs do. Although the top three have been remarkably stable after Cummins years of rehabbing. Injuries are a rotation policy. Be smart. Such as resting Bumrah in this test. But, we should not count injuries as disqualifying either.

On another note, Gill looked unsure what to do when opening against spin with the hard ball while Rohit was sublime. Things to work on for the youngster.

Prasen, think your stats exclude the 39 not out because he came in at no.7! It will probably make his average lightly better! Closer to 14!

Yes, that would bring his average to 14.45 in the last two years. That's decent but we should try to push it closer to somewhere between 15 and 20 given our bad lower tail. Maybe when we send him in at #8, he does not take his batting seriously. This should be a conversation between him and the coach.

Pujara's bizarre dismissal (the bat fell out of his hand after he'd grounded it, and he was narrowly run out before he could get his foot behind the line) has opened the flood-gates, with Rohit being narrowly stumped and Pant being stumped by a country mile. Rahane looked in all sorts of trouble for his quick 10, but fell to a catch at forward short leg. Moeen has been sublime or ridiculous (with lots of full tosses, some of which went unpunished). Kohli has been solid, but perhaps too stolid. A sublime glance off Moeen wasn't credited to him (but given as 4 leg-byes instead).

Axar batting like a proper batsman against Leach, but all at sea against the off-spin of Moeen (leg spin to a leftie). And just as I write that, he fluently flicks Moeen to the midwicket boundary!

Axar falls LBW to Moeen off a narrow umpire's call. Why don't our umpires behave like the Aussie ones to home batsmen?

The fluent Ashwin back at the batting crease. Very nice innings, and just as I write that he is dropped at slip (by Stokes of all people) off the wicketless Broad. Foakes is standing up to Broad, which is pretty amazing (and a bit insulting to the ageing warrior :p ).

Excellent 90-run stand between Ashwin and Kohli. Ash gets his first test 50 in quite a while. Terrific all-round performance to follow-up the 5/43 with a half-century.

These umpires need to stop chickening out and giving marginal calls in favour of England.

Did you just see Ishant’s effort to try his best to be bowled? If he can’t even stand around now, when will he?

Edit—thanks. You’ve stuck around for 13 balls. That’s all we ask for. Thank you.

Wow... you can bat, Ishant. We know that. Please do this more often.
