In this case, clarification came from BWF that Saina and Prannoy were still positive on RT PCR tests but their antibody tests also turned out positive. So, that RT PCR positive may be from dead virus they says as they were infected a month ago. So, organisers decided to let them play.
How does the antibody test prove that they are not currently infected? There is a small but non-zero chance that the first RT PCR test was a false positive and they picked up a fresh infection.
CDC guidelines wrote:
  • In general, a positive antibody test is presumed to mean a person has been infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, at some point in the past. It does not mean they are currently infected.
  • Antibodies usually start developing within 1 to 3 weeks after infection.
  • People who receive positive results on an antibody test but don’t have symptoms of COVID-19 and have not been around someone who may have COVID-19 are not likely to have a current infection. They can continue with normal activities, including work, but still take steps to protect themselves and others.

Ah I see. Makes sense. I too thought it was weird that they casually let them play when things were unclear.

They did mention it that it was due to all of them being positive in the recent past.

^^^ Yeah, it is crazy. I was trying to guess and conjure up scenarios of choice between vaccines and back-up vaccine and all that... Looks like none of that is the case. They just approved the vaccine, will use it, and that is that. But perhaps the idea is to take a Govt risk and just order (and maybe pay for) the production of the vaccine, expecting nothing to go wrong and have all the Phase-III results available in 2-3 months time. At least, there is no report that they are distributing any Covaxin yet. What is sent to the states are all Covishield from SII Pune. Everybody seems ready to start vaccinating in a couple of days. I think the "some sort of approval" that was given was needed to push Bharat BioTech Hyderabad to go for big production to have these 5 million doses ready as soon as possible (also for some big doses for a lot of poorer countries begging India for vaccines)... Hopefully all the study results (or at least an interim set of results) will be available by March/April when they will actually start using Covaxin. Keep the fingers crossed. If they start injecting Covaxin now, they are asking for serious trouble. I don't think they will take that risk. I think no export approval is in place either, for Covaxin.

Only +17K today on our weekly peak day (wednesday)... Wow. We had 20.5K last Wednesday, so this is again 3500 less than last week. After a small flattening due to Christmas/NewYears, we seem to have started to again get good drops in case totals. The seven-day average of cases fell by 494 to 16.7K per day. 218 deaths. Today's 17K cases were from about 1005K tests at a 1.69% positivity.

Kerala had 6K of our 17K today, but that is a couple of hundred less than on last Wednesday... More importantly, it is from 5K more tests, so the positivity fell from 10% a week ago to 8.7% today... I'm keeping hope for a fairly noticeable drop in the Kerala numbers in the coming days. Please God, help your "own country"!

----------------
ICMR Update: 184,232,305 total tests... Wednesday tests: 743,191... Way low. Not good. There is some 150K-200K difference between the state reports and ICMR report these days. Not sure what is going on. Lab count: 2323

I read that vaccinations have started in a large way from few days back in US. Is there any data on how many people are vaccinated till date. As of now at least it does not seem to have much effect on daily new infections - they continue to be more than 2 lakhs per day.

Here is one interview with Rachna Dhingra, an activist who has been working with the gas victims of Bhopal.

'In Bhopal, every rule in the vaccine trial book has been broken'
Serious violations that have taken place in the phase 3 trial of Covaxin developed by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech in Bhopal have shocked scientists, activists and citizens.

First. The volunteers of the trial conducted by the People's College of Medical Sciences and Research Centre were residents from the areas close to the Union Carbide factory, or rather the 1984 Bhopal gas victims.

Then, it came to light that the 'poor and illiterate' volunteers didn't know they were participating in a trial.

A majority of these volunteers signed the consent forms thinking they were getting vaccinated against coronavirus and not taking part in a trial. And the Rs 750 offered by the hospital was a large amount for these poor people.

Finally, the death of a 42-year-old daily labourer who had participated in the vaccine trial.

The hospital and Bharat Biotech strongly refuted the allegations by the family and activists that his death was related to the vaccine. According to the hospital, it was due to poisoning.

This incident has cast a shadow over the way medical trials are conducted in India.

As per report, they air-shipped its COVID-19 vaccine Covaxin (16.5 lakh doses) to 11 cities in India, those are Gannavaram (Vijayawada), Guwahati, Patna, Delhi, Kurukshetra, Bangalore, Pune, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Chennai and Lucknow.
