Sports lovers continue to be deprived of any action. World wrestling championships to be held in Dev '20 was converted into world cup with no dates announced due to 2nd wave of Corona virus in Europe. I guess we have to make do with action in Australia Test cricket series.

Yes, the only sport which are currently being played are tennis, golf and cricket ( did I miss any other) ? Why others are not even tried. One can understand contact sports like wrestling etc but why the likes of shooting, archery etc cannot be played. The competitiors do not have to come near each other.

Another strange thing is tennis, golf etc are being played in Europe and US where covid is raging and not in Asia where the general covid trend is downward.

Covid is raging in the US and Europe because we were lax and never implemented a coherent plan to contain the virus. That is why we are still allowing tennis, golf, etc. And, Asia is more cautious, at least East Asia, and therefore, no tennis is being played there.

In the U.S., baseball season was completed and basketball season will begin from Dec. 22nd. American football is going on in both college and pros.

Not sure why these "non-contact" sports aren't competing. I suspect this isn't that great for the Indian athletes who often need to train or at least compete internationally to be world class. Perhaps, our domestic training set up has improved enough that this isn't needed as much but we'll find out at Tokyo assuming that the Olympics are held next year. I assume that a vaccine will need to be developed and all competitors will need to be vaccinated to compete....

For any competition, you have to get people together. They have to create a 14 day quarantine in the new country, it increases the cost of doing business, and limits the people who can come from wherever. Generally, any gathering is a threat and travel is not advised. The sports that are more money-generating do not want to lose the enormous amounts of money in the sport. So, they are ready to take all the risks associated with meets now. Sports that are not money generating see no point in taking up the costs associated with meeting now wrt jeopardizing human health and don't really care about large financial losses because they were not making money in the first place. That is why these sports are not doing anything while others are.

Just to add to this, those sports that have a TV income that is substantial can continue without significant audience and are doing so. Those that depend upon gate sales to make ends meet are not going to be able to raise that money that they are losing. So, the smaller sports are not going to be able to hold tournaments any time soon. Let's hope for the vaccine to work and the world to "normalize" soon. Then, we will have more sports. I hope that they move the Olympics another year. Or at least towards the end of next year if possible. Mid 2021 seems quite dicey now. But, who knows. Maybe the vaccine will be a smashing success.

I do not think sports like Archery, shooting etc depend a lot on gate sales. But, yes the number of competitors at the world cups for these are quite a few, I guess about 500-1000 over a week. That as you said will be logistical nightmare in the current covid times with all quarentine rules and all.

But, they have to start at some point of time early next year. Players also need to be ready for Olympics. Also , if they are not able to host these events, how will they host Olympics in July where the competitors will be in several thousands.

Vinesh Phogat played her first tournament since covid break ( she was also positive for covid) and came back with a bang winning the title beating the current European champion from Belarus by pin in the final.

This is an article posted before the tournament -

Vinesh Phogat ends long layoff with return to mat in Ukraine

Next week most of the Indian wrestlers will be at Rome ranking series including olympic qualified wrestlers.

Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat won golds at Rome ranking series. Bajrang beat Ochir from Mongolia coming back in last 30 seconds when he was down in a repeat of 2019 world Championships semi final.

Vinesh won rather comfortably.

2 of the best wrestlers I'm Bajrang category and couple in Vinesh category were absent here. Still, these 2 remain among top 3-4 in the world and serious medal contenders at Tokyo.

It's amazing to see how comfortable Vinesh was through out the tournament. She just breezed through everyone.

Tomorrow the Asian olympic qualifiers start in Almaty, Kazakstan. We already have 3 in freestyle men and 1 women wrestling qualfied.

Our best chance in these Asian qualifiers would br in women wrestling where I think we are in reckoning in almost all 5 weight categories where we have entered and hope we get at least 2-3 quotas here.

It starts with Greco Roman where our chances are less. Our 87 Kg guy Sunil Kumar is seeded to qualify but he is likely to fight a local Kazakh wrestler in the SF, so will have to overcome all the partial refereeing that we see in Kazakhstan to prevail.

No quotas Greco Roman for us. 5 out of 6 Indian wrestlers went to the SF but all of them lost there. We are still not even among top 4-5 nations in Asia in Greco Roman.
