Disappointing. I was hoping he would be able to reverse last week's result. Instead it seems Djere figured out how to dismantle Sumit's game even better :-(

Started well, led 3 nil in the opening set, and at 3-1 had couple of points to go up 4-1, once he squandered that lead it was just one way traffic from then onwards.

Djere took out #24 Lajovic in the second round, so perhaps he's in good form. However, Sumit should have made it a much closer match given that he started with a 3-0 lead in the first set.

Djere has now reached the SF there at Sardinia. In fact he is the highest ranked player left in the draw now.

This weekend Sumit is swithing to indoor hard courts in Germany.

At €325,610 Cologne ATP 250

[Q1] Sumit Nagal (IND,129) vs. Norbet Gombos (SVK,104)

Gombos has been good form lately, reached third round of French open and second round at US open main draw. So, tough one for Sumit first up.

Excellent win by Sumit over in-form Gombos.

At €325,610 Cologne ATP 250

[Q1] Sumit Nagal (IND,129) d. (6) Norbet Gombos (SVK,104) 75 64

At some point of time towards the end of second set, Sumit realised that he needs to vary his game and cannot just outhit Gombos. So, he slowed down the game, not giving any pace to Gombos and he did make errors to give the break to Sumit in 12th game.

Sumit continued in same vein in second set and was up 4-0, 30-0 when all of a sudden he served 2 double faults and then an unforced error to give 1 break back to Gombos. Then, missed 2 matchpoints at 5-2, 40-15 on Gombos serve and then again while serving for the match at 5-3 got too tight and lost his serve. But, thankfully he played an excellent return game to break Gombos again to take the match.

Next,

[Q2] Sumit Nagal (IND,129) vs. (1) Pierre-Hughes Herbert (FRA,81)

Another real tough one for Sumit.

Very nice win for Sumit in Q1 against a good, higher-ranked claycourter. I like his choice of tournaments too.

Good solid win by Sumit over an opponent who had beating him last year when Sumit was playing near his best.

This win is on hard court. If the hard courts are relatively slow, then that is a surface on which he sometimes plays his best.

Yes, this is on indoor hard courts. I watched most of the match and the courts did not seem slow. That is why it was surprising how well Sumit played. His return of serve was really good yesterday. His serve is still an issue and he just gets too tight when serving under pressure like serving for the set and the match. If he gets some confidence in his serve and gets it up to at least average level like say Somdev, he can be pretty successful in fast hard courts too.

Unfortunately, Sumit could not do much against Herbert.

At €325,610 Cologne ATP 250

[Q2] Sumit Nagal (IND,129) l. (1) Pierre-Hughes Herbert (FRA,81) 26 26

Herbert is a top class player on these indoor hard courts and beat Felix Allisime on this surface sometime back. Unfortunate for Sumit to run into him in Q2.

Yes, just got that news. 2 lucky loser spots opened up.

At €325,610 Cologne ATP 250

[R1] (LL) Sumit Nagal (IND,129) vs. Miomir Kecmanovic (SRB,41)

Miomir won Kitzubuhel ATP title last month on clay but after that had 3 first round losses including at French open. It will be still tough for Sumit but hope he can take advantage of this luck.

Will be very tough, Kecmanovic has a very good record on hard both indoor and outdoor.

Good to see that he made it in as LL. Made some money too. But it seems Sumit needs to have everything go perfectly in his game to handle these top-100 players, especially on hard courts. Not much margin of error. Hope for the best.
