For a #6 or a #7, you need 20 runs in an over or something like that. Hardik consistently has a good strike rate. He can give you a few good overs too when fit. The modern game has become more about big hitters.

Sundar is in the Axar, Bhuvi mode. He can bowl line and length but does not get wickets. He is no Rashid Khan though because he is not that good at the end. Etc. I suppose you can have 1-2 of the restrictive bowlers and 2-3 wicket takers.

Virat's innings was really poor. But, Finch, Sundar, etc. did no favors either. ABD failed and that was that. On a small Sharjah ground, the par is maybe 195. Virat was playing for 160. Terrible. He single-handedly did them in.

Interestingly, both Mayank and Prithvi have played tests but not T20Is! And, in tests, both average about 55 with a healthy SR (for tests). I'd say play them in T20Is. We know what we will get from Rohit, Dhawan, Rahul, and Kohli. Rest them. Then, based on how these guys do against international bowling, we can decide to pick the T20 World Cup team.

Among the strike bowlers (qual: 8 wickets, ~1/match):

Shardul 18.62/8.27
Bumrah 20.18/7.92
Chahal 20.54/7.53
Shami 22.33/8.73

The rest are above 25. Shami is too wild and can't bat. Shardul is a handy bat to have at #9 or so.

Best economy:

Axar 5.56/18
Sundar 5.61/29.2
Ravi Ashwin 6.73/16.28
Bhuvi 6.98/33

Axar has done well. And can bat.

So: Hardik, Jadeja, Bhuvi, Shardul, Chahal, Bumrah

Not bad. The value for Sundar is that he spins the ball the other way. Both Chahal and Jadeja spin it the same way. The problem is that the tail becomes flaky. Maybe select one of Jadeja/Hardik and get a specialist bat.

Hardik is the best hitter in the country, so he comes in the T20 lineup even if he can't bowl. Last year, he batted at 190+ SR (2nd best, right after Russel) and the main reason why MI won the trophy. This year he doesn't seem to be his usual self, maybe because he still doesn't feel 100% fit after injury (or maybe a little rusty); but still pretty good to be amongst the top. I think it was Kohli's/selectors fault that he got overused across all 3 formats, which led to his injuries. With him in the lineup, we immediately become contenders for the top prize.

Somehow Ashwin's mojo seems to be back. You can rely on him to not leak runs and he is getting wickets too. I would pick him over Chahal (who seems to be fading now). Also why are we talking about Bhuvi, the guy is out for a long time it looks like. Aren't we talking about Australia series? Even when fit, he doesn't do as well in International games as he does in IPL, so I would stay away from him. Deepak Chahar seems to be a better version of Bhuvi.

Ashwin seems to be getting wickets more than Sundar. He is a tad more expensive but I would take the strike power anyday. Besides, he is possibly a better bat. In case, we are going with both Jadeja and Hardik, we need more spine in the tail because both these guys can hit but are not very consistent. Clearly, other than Bumrah, none of the others are a shoo-in for me.

prasen, I do not think Shardul is an international level bowler unless he gets back to 140+ (doesn't have the control to prevent getting tonked if he is trundling at 125-130). Has he picked up his pace?

Otherwise I agree with the 6 to 11. It is not great but it is the best we have to offer right now. Unfortunately Indian cricket doesn't even have a Pat Cummins. Big strike bowler who can club the ball on a good day.

@indiasportsfan, we are talking about the next two T20 WCs over the next 24 months.

I also disagree that he performs worse internationally, he is as economical as he is in IPL (7.04 in internationals vs 7.20 in IPL). He is not a strike bowler in either (26.5 average vs 25.1).

The problem is the ones with pace are also getting similarly tonked. Nobody really is afraid of 140k anymore.

How about jagdeesan! He is probably never going to get a chance till MSD retires, and he could slide in for Pant! Also how come Chris Gayle is not part of CSK :p

No one is afraid of pace but everyone looks forward to trundling. Bumrah wouldn't be Bumrah without having the range to bowl 145ks.

Jadeja with another good cameo with the bat. As did Hardik yesterday.

With Delhi Capitals requiring 20 runs to win off the last over, Dhoni hands the last over to Jadeja??! Especially when Bravo has an over left, this is just unconscionable captaincy.

Prithvi has completely faded. You cannot have someone so inconsistent being granted an India cap. He needs to go to the A-team and get some form back. He is the best junior talent we have though.

So the leaderboard now (by SR, qual avg: 25):

Jadeja 40/181, Mayank 48/161, Samson 26/161, Pandya 31/159, Surya 35/152, Tewatia 44/145, Kishan 37/144.
Backup: Dhawan 51/143.

The all-IPL team would be as follows by batting order: Mayank, Samson, Surya, Kishan, Tewatia, Hardik, Jadeja.

Surya, Tewatia, and Kishan should be given A-team caps if they are consistent and can perform like this for the entire IPL.

Samson has done nothing over the last almost five games to deserve a place even in the RR team let alone the IPL XI. Actually, Dhawan is probably the best opening bat now. Shaw is an utter failure.

Well, yes. Everyone has a bad five game stretch. Like Prithvi, he has the lowest average. Meaning, continued failures will see him go below the cutoff. Like Sin Hombre says, at least Samson bats fast. That means that he does not eat as many balls up if he is failing, which is less of a harm than batting slowly and taking up valuable resources from other fellow bats. Dhawan is generally too slow in the modern game. Of course, he is the best batsman if we look just at one game, which we seem to focus too much on. Overall, in this IPL, I would prefer Mayank's body of work to Dhawan's. Also, he has a long track-record of failures in the international game. If we have to give chances to people who have flaws, let us give that to the youngsters who have the chance to rectify the flaws and serve for a longer time. Of course, if Dhawan keeps batting like this, he bats himself in. Given this show, I would not mind if he gets another series. But, if we are keeping Rohit, I would prefer Mayank over Dhawan in the first XI.

Yes, Mayank over Dhawan. No quibble there.

So, then Dhawan over Rohit? I am fine with that for a few series although Rohit does have a pretty good international body of work. We know what Rohit can and cannot do. Let us see if Dhawan can be consistent.
