Tough loss for Sumit. However, this was one of his better performances recently as Djere is a solid player with wins of Schwarzmann and Sinner in the last month. Per my calculation, he had 13 break points to the 11 break points that his opponent had, so this was an absolutely even match. Hopefully, he can carry this form forward in his next tournament.

Prajnesh managed to win a doubles match (although Divij, with yet another new partner, lost badly in R1). But Ramkumar lost in the STB in doubles R1 too -- to Balaji/Margaroli, the 3rd seeds, who have since lived up to their seeding, making the SF after a straight sets win in the QF.

At the Alicante Challenger Ram is drawn to play a 17yr old Spaniard Carlos Alcarez, fingers crossed for a long awaited win.
In the Dbls Ram is back with Purav where they are the top seeds.
Bala too figures in the dbls , partnering his regular Swiss player Luca Margaroli

Ram looses on 2 TB's (67,67), and much improved performance against a player touted as the next Nadal, and who just won a Challenger in Barcelona comming into Alicante.
The results of earlier losses would have been reversed had he played in the manner he displayed in this match.
Today's performance gave a hint, that might suggest Ram maybe clawing back to his game, but with Purav around for next few weeks, might just prove a distraction from Singles play and it may not get undivided attention.

On the contrary, I think having Purav around probably helped his performance today. They are top seeds in doubles: let's hope they live up to that seeding! Winning is a habit, and it should be OK to begin developing that habit (for this season) in doubles. And the winning contagion can then spread to singles...

Considering that he typically loses in the first round and so isn't exactly exhausting himself playing singles, playing doubles should actually be good for him especially if they win a few matches.

The top-seeded Ramkumar-Purav pair have a tough R1 match against former world #1 Nenad Zimonjic and former world #5 David Marrero (both of whom have won the ATP year-end doubles championship, the latter in 2013).

Both our pairs lost in the QF today. Purav/RamK lost 26 26 to Granollers/Martinez (after beating Zimonjic/Marrero 64 60 in R1), while Balaji/Margaroli lost to Couacaud/Olivetti 46 46.

Both Ramkumar and Prajnesh are playing the Ismaning Challenger. Prajnesh, seeded 7th, will play a qualifier in R1.
Ramkumar plays Quentin Halys (FRA, 209; CH 102) in R1.
Ramkumar/Purav are seeded 2nd in doubles this week. Balaji/Margaroli are seeded 4th.

The players who beat Indians last week have gone to take titles in their respective tournaments. 17 year old Spaniard Alcarez who beat RamK in 2 hard fought sets went on to take the title at Alicante Challenger and bigger still Laslo Djere who beat Sumit in first round at Sardina ATP event in Italy went on to win the ATP title there. And to think that Sumit came very close to beating Djere a couple of weeks back on clay.

Right. But apart from the "high", one needs consistency to win a tournament. Our players often do not have it fitness-wise or mentally to do it day in and day out at a high level. That is why Leander could only sustain it for 1.5 sets against Andre ...

True. Prajnesh's match against an Argentine qualfier at 6 pm India time today followed by RamK's match on same court. Sumit's match at Cologne ATP at 7.30 pm India time which will be about same time of RamK's match. Hope for at least 2 out of 3 wins.

Prajnesh won in a hard fought match.

At Isanming Challenger 80

[R1] (7) Prajnesh Gunneswaran (IND,152) d. (Q) Tomas Martin Etchevery (ARG,250) 64 36 76(3)

A match which Prajnesh should have won easily . Could convert 1 out of 16 breakpoints and could not convert 3 match points at 5-4, 40-0 on Tomas serve. Thankfully, got it done in the end.

RamK on same court next.
