Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Yes, that will be the biggest worry. Shooters have been as good as they can be last year. So, it will be very difficult for them to retain their form.Another one is hockey. Can our team retain their this year's form ?
Other than that, wrestling, tennis, badminton, athletics (Neeraj) I can see only upside.
Boxing about the same - a little downside for Marykom who gets a year older, maybe a little down for Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting too. Mirabai was almost a guranteed medal if the olympics were held this year with everyone else other than China and North Korea were way behind her. But, Thai team has been banned due to doping cases. Not clear if their ban will be lifted by 2021. If so, it will increase competition for Mirabai.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
I think we have a pretty good bench of world class shooters right from the junior levels. Also, many of our top shooters are on the younger side, although youth does not have that much impact in shooting outside of experience. The hope is that while some of best shooters now may lose form, we'll have others improve to give us potential medalists even next year.
I am a little more worried about our mens and womens hockey team in that they appear to be near their peak and could be worse next year. I'm not sure if our younger bench is as good that they can easily replace some of the players in the top team that may get worse.
Agree also that Neeraj, Laksya Sen, Satwik/Chirag, Weightlifter Jeremy L etc. should be more competitive next year and may be long shot medal prospects by then.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
To be precise on 23rd July, 2021. Postponed by just less than 1 year. They have kept the starting day as Saturday as was if would have happned this year.
Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
I am hearing reports that due lockdowns between International borders, anti-doping agencies lost access to athletes whereabouts and testing in regular schedules, so actually postponing the Olympics by almost an year instead of couple of months is a better prospect for spinach free games, but the impact of spinach can’t be ruled out for remaining olympic qualifiers though.
Talking of spinach found that wrestler Narsing Yadav is technically eligible for Tokyo now who would complete his 4 year ban by July 2020. He used to compete in 74 kg that Sushil Kumar competes who so far is considered our best prospect in qualifiers. We haven’t qualified any one in this weight class yet.Does anyone know how competitive Narsing Yadav is now and if he is i am sure lots of masala is due for news media throughout the remaining one year

So, now the spinach-walas are drawing up a plan so that they can inject a lot now and then taper off so that they cannot get caught!

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Narsingh has not fought in any competitions in last 4 years so it is difficult to judge what shape he is in but now that he is in with a chance he may get himself up. In this weight category actually Jitender won a silver at Asian championships and was to represent us at the Asian olympic qualifier. But, now with postponement everything will change and it can be a 3 way race between Sushil, Narsingh and Jitender.srini wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2020 10:06 pm Talking of spinach found that wrestler Narsing Yadav is technically eligible for Tokyo now who would complete his 4 year ban by July 2020. Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Yes, I hope we can celebrate that next year same time. We looked in a position to finish with our best our medals tally and that got postponed by Covid. Hope it is not taken away and we can have olympics next year.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
I think the percentage is easily over 95% atleast. Unless something big happens again, I don't see corona being the reason for next years cancellation. With different sports already starting ....like big football leagues already started and the likes of SK and France are even allowing limited fans into the grounds. India is looking to start no audience sports and training for athletes from August itself. Some have started already...like Srabani Nanda who is in Jamaica training with reigning 100m olympic champion Elaine Thompson clocked an excellent 11.51 sec timing but it wont count as the wind speed is above the limit. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=624899541564504
The only sports which I see may start training late are water sports.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Tokyo doesn't want to organize the Olympics unless fans are fully allowed.
This will only happen if there is an effective vaccine which has been widely rolled by June of next year. 50% chance of that.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
No though. The olympics will obviously be parred down which the Japan officials are openly saying. They could go on with less spectators too. The JOC president clearly stated that not going on with the olympics will cost double the amount of what it cost if they go on next year.

Looks like our Olympic preparations are in tatters

This was going to be our best chance to beat London's 6 medal tally but Covid has ruined it.

Re: Tokyo Olympics 2020
Not surprised that our Olympic planning is not in great shape as our domestic training infrastructure and culture is not world class in most sports. For our athletes to be Olympic contenders, they need to compete and train internationally (or with world class coaches and trainers) consistently.
That said, our realistic Olympic medals prospects are not that many. If all our resources for this Olympics are targeted to these handful of shooters, wrestlers, boxers, and badminton players in 2021, then we could still eclipse our London haul. Perhaps, Neeraj Chopra among our track athletes has a chance, so could also be selectively focused on.
The other qualifiers who have no/low chance to win medals can still go as they are often Asiad prospects but we will get more Olympic bang for our bucks by focusing on our relatively few olympic medal contenders.
