Re: ATP tour suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic

It will be nice if Wimbledon paid out the prize fund to the players (the top 128 who would have made the main draw can share the main draw money) while the next 128 could share qualifiers money. This would be quite helpful especially for the players outside the top 100...

How are below 150 ranked players going to cope when the tournament revenue dries up? Here’s one article highlighting the plight of women players.

Obviously our guys are struggling too :-(

Looks like Wimbledon did pay out 25000 GBP for 128 main draw players and half that for the 112 qualifiers (for both men and women). Prajnesh, RamK and Ankita would have collected the qualifiers share but I think Sumit Nagal at #127 should have collected the main draw share. Although these numbers are quite modest, it is better than nothing.

Not bad at all. Sumit received a total of US$ 113K last year. This year he received $23K before tour shut down, now he gets $25K for Wimbledon ( provided he got the main draw money), hopefully he will get around $25K this year when tour resumes making a total of $75K against $113K. Considering his expenses would have gone down too drastically, net he would not be too bad financially compared to last year. I guess Prajnesh and Ankita would not be too bad off.

The Citi Open in Washington, DC, where Indians have done well in recent years, has been cancelled. I suspect the US Open too is in some danger.

Re: ATP tour returns with Cincinnati Masters

Post by PKBasu »

The Cincinnati Masters is being played -- not in Cincinnati but in New York -- this coming week. The last direct acceptance in to the main draw was #46-Lorenzo Sonego (ITA). In the qualifying draw, the last direct acceptance was #107, and the next four ranked players got in as Alternates (the lowest-ranked being #111-Dennis Kudla). So none of our guys would have made it in, sadly. I hope Prajnesh has got some quality practice before flying out to Flushing Meadows. 20 year old wild-card Sebastian Korda (USA, 224) qualified into the main draw. He is Petr Korda's son, but has chosen US rather than Czech citizenship, and that paid off handsomely here.

NRI Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury (GBR), the winners of the last Slam doubles title (at this year's AO), are seeded 3rd in doubles, and play Garin/Ruud in R1.
Bopanna-Shapovalov play 5th seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in R1. If both pairs win a couple of rounds, Bopanna-Shapo are drawn to play Ram-Salisbury in the QF.

Bopanna-Shapovalov lost in R1 to the 5th seeds Granollers-Zeballos 46 67(1).

Ram/Salisbury are in the QF at Cincinnati.

ATP has updated the 2021 calendar giving Singapore a 1-year license to hold a 250-level tournament. This will be right after the Australian open along with 2 other similar tournaments. So, a good chance for some of our players to enter here. Hope we get to see Yuki (maybe?) along with Prajnesh, Sumit, and Ramk (quailes).
