Re: Sumit Nagal thread

Post by sameerph »

ATP has posted an article on 10 players to watch out for on challenger tour and contains Sumit's name-

Ten To Watch In 2020: ATP Challenger Tour
Sumit Nagal [No. 130]
India's No. 2 made a grand entrance on one of the game's biggest stages in 2019. In August, Nagal was standing on Arthur Ashe Stadium, under the lights on Day 1 of the US Open. His opponent: Roger Federer. Facing the opportunity of a lifetime, the qualifier would show what the stars of the ATP Challenger Tour have to offer, taking the first set against the Swiss star before eventually succumbing.

A little momentum can spark even greater things and that was certainly the case for Nagal. Just two weeks later, he would kick off an impressive month of September with a final in Banja Luka, title in Buenos Aires and semi-final run in Campinas. In November, he rose to a career-high No. 127 in the FedEx ATP Rankings and is targeting a Top 100 breakthrough in 2020.
Hope Sumit has similar success like last year early this year on challenger tour and then moves ahead to main tour soon. He has very few points to defend in first 3-4 months of the year. So, he can move ahead in the rankings with good performances.

Sumit is new India #1 this week with a ranking of 127 as Prajnesh could not defend his Thailand challenger points from last year. Prajnesh is now ranked #134. It can again change this week if Prajnesh wins a match in Dubai and Sumit loses early in Pau challenger but overall Prajnesh has a lot of points to defend in March too. So, he will have to really get some good results to claim back India #1 by end of March.

Would like to see both Sumit and Prajnesh get some wins and really earn the India #1. Right now, it appears that the one sliding slower is the one with #1 ranking. Prajnesh has a lots of points to defend in March but then Sumit will have a lot of points to defend in late summer and fall. Hopefully, both of them regain the form they showed at their peak last year....

Article about Sumit. Good thing that he has stated put in Germany and therefore getting a lot of opprtunties to practice during this period as compared to if he would have been in India -

Sumit played a tournament in Germany and won it beating 250th ranked Daniel Masur easily in the final -

India Tennis Star Sumit Nagal Wins And Grins!

Good to see an Indian player starting competing again. Sumit may be the first one to do so in any sport since lockdown began.

ATP challenger tour events are apparently starting from the week of August 17 and Sumit has entered the first week in Prague as per this news on ATP website -

Strong Entry Lists Welcome ATP Challenger Tour Restart

India's top-ranked player and World No. 127 Sumit Nagal knows it won't be easy, with such a strong field right out of the gates at the Challenger 125 stop.

"I'm really excited to play matches again and get in that competitive mode," Nagal told ATPTour.com. "It's what we train for. Everyone is feeling the same way. No one wants to be home anymore after all these months. All the players are going to try to play as much as they can. I cannot wait to get on the court and hit the ball again. I'm just really excited."

At the Prague Challenger , Sumeet has a R1 bye being the 6th seed, and has winnable matches up to the qtrs for a possible encounter with the Top seeded WC Wawrinka

All the best to Sumit. If he gets to play Wawrinka, it will be a good test to see the improvements Sumit has made to his game.

Sumit at #122 (which is a CH) in the live rankings with his QF at the Prague challenger. About 5 players behind him are still alive who can pass him but they all need to win more than 1 match to do so. So, hopefully he'll be at a career high at the end of the week even if he does not get past Wawrinka. Since Nagal took a set of the Swiss #1, maybe he can win 2 sets against the Swiss #2. :D

Anyone know what's next for Sumit. Is he getting a direct entry into the French Open or will he have to play qualies? I assume the qualies will take place in Paris, unlike at the U.S. Open.
