2020 French Open (postponed to 20Sept-4Oct)

Post by PKBasu »

Effectively, the entire clay court season is going to be cancelled. The French Open, scheduled to start in the third week of May, is being postponed by 4 months -- to start instead on 20th September, soon after the US Open. Here is the story from the French Open organizers:

I feel bad for Sumit. His chances are significantly better on clay, but he will lose a lot of chances.

Yes, Sumit is the main sufferer among the Indians. This year's clay season was likely to have been highly productive for him.

Covid cases have spiked in the last few days in France raising doubts about the rescheduled French open. But, yesterday the organisers announced that the tournament will go with reduced number of spectators only on show courts and no spectators for qualifying matches.

They have increased prize money for the qualifying tournament by 27% to help the fringe players who are financially hit. First round losers in qualifying will now get €10,000.

We have Sumit, Prajnesh and RamK on mens side and Ankita on womens side who have made the qualifying draw. So, it will be good for them.

Why is Ramkumar not playing anywhere yet? This is most unusual for him, and he will be at a huge disadvantage against the European players, who have been in tournament play for the last couple of months.

Yes, RamK is not listed anywhere next week too. So, he will going into French open qualies without any match practice if he is indeed going there.

It's going to be really cold in Paris -- 13C average, 9C minimum -- by the time the French Open final is played. Not freezing, but very cold indeed. (That's more or less the coldest it ever gets in Kolkata -- and Mumbai rarely has temperatures below 20C).

Any news about the acceptance lists for Men's doubles? It looks like a full draw, but will anyone other than Rohan and Divij make it in? I presume Leander will request a wildcard.

Excellent Q1 draw for all three of the Indian men. I am surprised that Ramkumar is going to the French Open without any competitive tennis under the belt. I hope he has been preparing hard somewhere in Europe, because he should surely be able to beat a French wildcard in Q1 under normal circumstances.

I think all three Indian men have a pretty good chance to qualify into the main draw, although I'm basing my hope re RamK on him being in normal form, i.e., having been playing something like competitive tennis somewhere!
35 year old grasscourter Dustin Brown should be easy pickings for Sumit in R1.
Prajnesh's main challenge in his bracket could come from Tommy Robredo, although I think Prajnesh should be able to take care of the ageing Spaniard.
