Is £20m worth spending for about 20 more medals at the CWG? I still think India should boycott these games and teach the arrogant Brits a lesson. Spend the money more wisely. GB are thinking of this compromise with a long term view on trade deals post Brexit. They would have totally ignored India's complaints 10 years ago!

That is the cost. If we are paying for it, we should ask for all the money that comes from ticketing, advertising and broadcasting that part of the games to be ours. We should then do a good PR exercise and try to make as much money as possible from it.

I think there is a lot of value to be had in getting in the good books of the world shooting and archery federations (who are both supporting this) and also ensuring the 2 sports continue to remain in the Olympics (western nations would rather replace them with skating, surfing or other hobbies of kids from their nations).

Commonwealth Games offers a rare chance for our track and field athletes and swimmers etc to compete against some of the world's best. Should they be denied the opportunity by India saying "boycott the games" because they are sub-standard?
As for shooting and archery being hosted by India to be counted towards medals tally in Birmingham it exposes the brittle structure of the CGF and absence of policies they have. They were obviously rattled by the boycott threat.
If winning medals in sub-standard competitions in shooting and archery can force India to spend money on hosting them, then we should not be talking of "substandard games" as a possible reason for boycotting the games permanently.
This whole controversy has suddenly given sports administrators and the Govt a mistaken notion we are about to break through as a sports power in the world. Even if we win 10-12 medals in the Tokyo Games, that will still be below what Azerbaijan (to cite just one example) won in Rio. And no one considers Azerbaijan as a sports superpower or power.

We may not be a sports superpower and won't be for a while but we are the 5th (or 6th) biggest economy in the world and it is about time we act like one, especially with the increasingly irrelevant piddly island.

China was already behaving like one in 1988 when they finished behind the likes of Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary.

While there is an element of truth in what Mugu says there is a bit of a double standard. Our track and field and swimmers (except a handful maybe) are substandard. Competing against the world's best has not done them much good anyway and will not do them any good. I do not think we should boycott the games but I am all for using the threat of boycott and our economic power to get what we want. In many sports, the sports bodies ignored us even when we were good in that sports for a while. For example, in cricket, why has England got to host so many world cups even though they have not been that good for a while and could only win on home ground by a whisker and an ounce of luck? There is nothing wrong in using our economic power to get what we want as long as what we are asking is not morally wrong. There is nothing wrong in shooting and archery being counted as sports.

To be clear, this is not like kabaddi that traditionally, only we played. We are asking for sports that were in the Commonwealth Games in the past and have a long history in the Olympics, etc. If the other countries are not good at it, then that does not mean our victories are meaningless. Were all our hockey golds meaningless because the competition then was sub-standard?
