Chess World Cup 2019

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Chess World Cup 2019

Post by Sin Hombre »

128 person knockout, with the finalists qualifying for the candidates.

11 Indians qualified but with Anand giving it a miss, we have 10 participants.

Highest seed is Hari at #17 but he is coming into this tournament in very good form. Hopefully we will have at least one Indian in the last 16.

Hari and Adhiban (with black), and Nihal (with white) win R 1.1

4 draws and 3 other losses for us.

Would expect all 3 of Hari, Adhiban and Nihal to move on to R2 after R1.2 tomorrow, hopefully Vidit who drew with black today will join them. Would be nice if we can get to at least 5/10 moving to R2.

Pretty good day for us with 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 defeat.

Nihal won again (!), as did Hari. Those 2 + Adhiban and Vidit are through to R2.

Ganguly, Sethu, SL Narayan, Aravindh and Abhijeet all play rapid tiebreaks tomorrow. Hoping that at least 2/5 are able to move on to R2.

Tough day for us with Aravindh only one moving on to R2.

We have 5 in the last 64, which is the same as last time. No Anand so could be argued as a slight improvement.

3/5 should move on to R3 off ELO so would hope to see that.

All 5 of our guys had white today.

Hari and Nihal won again, draws for Vidit and Adhiban and Aravindh lost.

Hopefully, Hari Nihal and Vidit can convert and move into R3 tomorrow.

Nihal had a slight advantage but blundered badly in time pressure to lose. :damn: Off to the tiebreaks we go. He is the stronger player in faster time controls but this loss will be weighing on him.

Adhiban drew and goes to the tiebreak as well.

Hari had a completely winning position but now is in a drawn game which I suppose is fine since he won the first leg. Drew the 2nd match and he is through to the 3rd round (last 32).

VIdit had some chances but doesn't look like he will convert and we will likely go into the tiebreak here too. Actually, Vidit managed to convert his slight advantage into a win :notworthy:

Aravindh appears lost. Ok, Aravindh is eliminated.

So, Hari and Vidit are through. Adhiban and Nihal need to win their tiebreaks.

Another day, again a pair of losses.

Our campaign here has completely derailed.

Bin this abomination of a thread.

No Anand, no party for us in chess even after 3 decades.
