Allertova has a career-high ranking of 55 reached in 2016. Later that year she beat Ana Ivanovic in R1 of the US Open (the last professional match of the latter's career). But in the last 4 months, Allertova has played exclusively on clay, winning a couple of $60K tournaments in her home country.

Thanks Gautam for a superb eyewitness narrative.

An excellent win by Ankita, this was Ankita's 3rd win over Ysaline Bonaventure, last 2 wins were on the clay-court.
Disappointed by Ram's loss, his struggle continues.

Ankita has now win a round in each of Australian open, Wimbledon and US open qualifying this year. She has certainly made progress this year as solid top 200 level player. Now, hoping she get at least more 1 win here. 2 will be great to qualify for the main draw.

Ankita's attitude is admirable. She makes steady, hard-working progress year after year -- and stays extremely fit along the process. It would be wonderful if she is able to capitalise on this victory over the highest-ranked player in her section of the draw, and make it all the way to the main draw.

An excellent win by Ankita, this was Ankita's 3rd win over Ysaline Bonaventure, last 2 wins were on the clay-court.
The last two wins for Ankita over Bonaventure were in 2014 and in the junior ranks in 2009. Today's win was qualitatively different. Ysaline Bonaventure is ranked 111 (close to her career-high of 109 hit earlier this year) because she qualified into both the Australian Open and Wimbledon main draw in 2019. This was a very meaningful win. (The one in 2014 was quite meaningful at the time too, since Bonaventure was close to the top-200, and Ankita beat her on Belgian clay, but beating #111 at the US Open is clearly a bigger deal).

It’s definitely a meaningful win and she fought very hard. Her opponent was a powerful lefty who was trying to avoid long rallies. It was over 95 degrees and super humid. Her energy level was up through the entire set. She’s a fighter for sure. But to reach top 100 and stay there (if that’s their goal) would be extremely tough unless you build a couple of weapons. First serve appears weak.

Also she had her team with her. Coach (appeared to be Narendranath), physio and a few family members.

I just confirmed with the physio and it was indeed Narendranath. I couldn’t recognize him until much later when Vishnu pointed it out.

My old pal Narendranath - haven’t seen him in awhile ( last time we played each other was in the national hardcourt doubles quarters in Bangalore in 1985!

Really gritty win by Sumit! He was down a break in the first set but then came back and won the first set even though he had less points and less break chances than his opponent. He then dominated the second set.

He will be higher ranked than his QR2 opponent, so a good chance for him to go further here.

[Q1] Sumit Nagal (IND, 190) d. 13-Tatsuma Ito (JPN, 132) 76(6) 62

Next up:

[Q2] Sumit Nagal (IND, 190) vs Peter Polansky (CAN, 192).

Polansky, the former Canadian #1 who beat Yuki at the French Open qualifiers a couple of years ago (but lost to him at Ilkley soon afterwards and in Q3 of the AO last year), is 31 years old now, with his singles career clearly on the wane. A good opportunity for Sumit to pull off another win.

Excellent win by Sumit and glad he did it in straight sets.
One more win should crown him as Indian # 2
