Is that the end of England’s challenge at this World
Cup?
Too early to say that, but please do ask the same question next week and God willing i will be happy to answer "YES" I always relish it when Pommies get eliminated in any game or sport.
I am also excited at the rare prospect of Pakistanis rooting for Indian victory in our two matches with Bangla and England.

Before that, their team needs to win today' match against New Zealand.

NZ- Pak World Cup record is heavily skewed in favour of Pak, so we never know and analogies are already drawn between the similar situations of their earlier encounter with NZ in 1992 and Pak ultimately lifting the cup.
My own thoughts - sub continent teams have always been highly talented than SENA nations, it’s always their wrong approach towards the game or selection mess by drawing wrong conclusions resulting in Australia’s dominance. India moved on from those days and started playing and managing its team in a highly professional way thanks to their interactions with international players in IPL, while Pak remained, well Pak, the unpredictable side it always was.
Loved Jay's reference to Petherick's hat-trick from 1976, surely one of the more minor ones now in Indian test history
No Indian had a test hat-trick until Harbhajan's famous one at the Eden Gardens in 2001 on the way to a famous victory. And then there was Irfan Pathan's hat-trick in the first over at Karachi in 2006 (although India went on to lose that test and the series as a result).
In the World Cup, Chetan Sharma took the first Indian hat-trick in 1987 against New Zealand (in the last group match, which took India to the semifinal, with Gavaskar later getting his first and last ODI century in his penultimate ODI).

Wasn't Petherick the bowler who a great batsman by the name of Bishen Singh Bedi hit for 3 sixes in a row?
Nice to see Gavaskar getting a mention, arguably India's worst one day batsman, who scored 36 in 60 overs in the 1st World Cup and had a highest score of 25 in the 1983 World Cup. I think his career strike rate was 54 or something whereas Kapil was 99.
IIRC, Petherick's was the only hat-trick in test cricket during a 28 year period or something, right, PKB? .... Miandad and Intikhab Alam were two of the wickets. Can't remember who the third was. Zaheer Abbas??

The third one was Wasim Raja; Javed Miandad, Wasim Raja and Intikhab Alam ... Petherick's took hat-trick after 16 yrs of Lance Gibbs's hat-trick against Aussies in 1960-61.
So much for the invincible NZ.I think the scheduling made it possible for them to remain undefeated so far...Lanka, Bangla, Afghan, SA, WI of these which one do we consider strong side? SA is not the side it used to be and won only one match so far against Afghans. The only strong contender India match got washed out.Now let NZ fight it out the remaining two matches - Australia and England and prove themselves. This cup gets interesting!
For the current top 4 teams to go through to semis (assuming Pak and SL win their remaining matches) England HAS to win both matches and consequently NZ should win against Aus (because Eng plays NZ) Meanwhile India must win against WI and Ban. That Eng-SL game has opened up all possibilities!
I like it if two teams from sub continent can sneak into semis and I don’t mind even if Pak is one in the mix as long as India can also make it. In Soccer world cups also I used to wish 2 teams from Europe and 2 from South America would make to semis, never liked it to be an all European affair
India have two games in hand -- we're the only team to have played just 5 matches (one of them washed out). If we beat WI, we move to #2 on the table, and we'll be clear #1 (ahead of Australia by a point) if we beat England.
Pakistan have Afghanistan next (their 8th match), followed by a near-quarter-final against Bangladesh.
Bangladesh have two matches -- against India and Pakistan. So, if Pak beat Afghanistan as expected, Bangladesh will need to beat Pakistan by a big margin to have a chance (assuming India will beat Bangladesh).
SL have a match in hand (relative to England, Pak and B'desh). They play SA next (Friday); if SL win that, they draw level on points with England (and 1 ahead of Pak/BD). Then SL have a relatively easy one against WI -- followed by their last match against India.
England's chances of making the SF are looking slim, as the only matches they have left are against India (Sunday) and New Zealand.
Yes, it is funny how the so called favourites at the start of the world cup, England have performed at home losing 3 matches to Pakistan, SL and Australia. Their batting looks strong on paper but has faltered when mattered.
They can still go thru if they win the matches India and NZ. They can go thru with 1 win out of 2 too but will lot of other results going their way. i.e Pakistan losing to Bangaladesh, Bangladesh losing to India and Sri Lanka losing 2 of the 3 matches. Looks difficult for SL too as their net run rate is bad. They may not go thru even if they win 2 of their 3 matches.
At the moment, Pakistan looks the favorite to go thru to SF as fourth team behind Aus,Ind and NZ. They have to just win their 2 relatively easy matches against Afganistan and Bangladesh and hope England do not win 2 tough ones against India and NZ. In the scenario, most likely we will see India-Pak semi final.
Disastrous batting today. Most batsmen are getting out after consuming a lot of balls. Kohli seems to be playing on a different pitch though. Don't see this team winning the World Cup.
