He is out for 3 weeks as per reports. If a replacement is named for him he cannot come back ( except as replacement for another injured player ).

So, we will have to take a decision if to replace him or wait for him to be fit for semi final and make do with DK or Vinay Shankar in the meantime.

Having a WC in England is a farce. We're going to see some semi finalist who only played 3-4 games.

Simply get Rishabh Pant to join the team and get Rahul to open the batting and have Pant or Dhoni at no. 4, depending on the match situation. Dhawan will be missed but if Pant and Rahul make it up, it would be great.

Speculation rife from several media outlets that Pant will replace injured Dhawan. Not sure why they would do have included DK or Vijay shankar if they wanted to replace someone injured with Pant ?? I think if you replace someone in WC, you can't bring them back again even after recovery which means end of road for Dhawan in this WC.
So isn't it logical if that's what they intended to do then they should have included Pant in the original squad instead of one of the above two isn't it

Good decision if this is what they have decided. Pant is the closest like-for-like replacement for Dhawan. A left-hander who can score quickly (and is not too consistent :) ). Dhawan's loss is a very big blow for India, and Pant is the best way to fill that hole. Rahane is available nearby (he's made a century against Notts recently too), but his record in ODIs is poor.

The other one who should have been seriously considered is Mayank Agarwal, but he is never the first one the selectors think about.

It is a good decision to bring in Risabh Pant. Karthik inclusion was based on his WK skillset (selection is debatable), and Vijay Shankar was as a medium pace all rounder. Right now, Risabh will be joining as a left handed batsman as replacement to another main stream batsman. Ok, I am trying to rationalize the selectors.. :D

Because you do not want too many right-handed or left-handed batsmen. The handedness is useful if the players are of the same calibre. Of course, if it is between Gary Sobers and S.S. Das, you don't choose by left-handedness or right-handedness. In this team, there are not left-handed batsmen up the order other than the one. Hence, they want Pant in the middle to break up the monotony a bit.

This World Cup is going the way of the 1992 one, with the third rain-enforced abandonment now. South Africa are almost toast already -- 3 losses and 1 NR. This format (exactly the same as the 1992 one) is actually awful, and very unfair on teams that suffer on account of the weather. (In 1992, Pakistan were 74 all out against England, who responded with 24/1 off 8 overs -- i.e., cruising to victory -- when Pakistan was saved by rain; the rest is history, Pakistan qualifying for the SF only by virtue of that no-result against England).

Completely farcical. If you must play this format, at least have a reserve day for every game.

This is partially a result of BCCI’s strong arm tactics. The devil aka IPL forced the World Cup dates out. Holding a World Cup in England is never a great idea due to its unpredictable weather often called to be the only predictable part about it. You reap what you sow. Reserve days is no guarantee although it’d be better. I read an article today in cricinfo why this is not logistically feasible but I don’t buy it fully.

This is BCCI's failure to hold England off. They have already had three world cups in England. Why should they get one more? We got one and a bit if we count the fractions. Australia and New Zealand got one each. As did South Africa and West Indies. We are getting one more. How about Sri Lanka getting one (final in Sri Lanka) co-hosting with India and the others getting a shot. England should get a fifth one after everyone has had four.

Pakistan got all the luck in the game (won the toss, Kohli walking without nicking, Bhuvi getting injured, Dhoni not reviewing plumb lbw of Babar) but still got a complete thrashing.

Rohit batted aggressively from the start for a change :notworthy: and Kuldeep the matchwinner with the ball

Great, clinical performance against Pakistan today. Kuldeep is back in form, and Vijay Shankar got to demonstrate how valuable his style of Bowling can be in overcast conditions.

Once again Rohit proving to be the best in the game right now. Some of his recent criticisms on the forum just don't make sense to me. How the f does it matter if he is slow early on? In the end he wins more matches for us than anyone else. It's best he takes his time and settles down, because we know that when he is settled, we will win the match almost every time.
On the other hand, somewhat disappointed by Kohli's performance. If he is the #1 player in the world, he should be taking the game away from the opposition when given such a start. He has been unable to do that in all the 3 matches so far.

Rohit has indeed been in sublime form in this World Cup. Actually, he and Dhawan complement each other perfectly -- with the latter the aggressor in the early stage, and Rohit catching up later. Now, with Dhawan injured, Rohit has nicely taken on the role of aggressor from the start. He was a tad lucky in the early stages yesterday (his boundary coming off an inside edge that just missed the stumps), but he didn't drop the momentum at any stage, while Rahul played the sheet-anchor. They had trouble with running between the wickets, but otherwise the new pair complemented each other beautifully too.

Kohli is still, by far, the world's greatest ODI batsman of all time. He has performed against everybody under pressure, and there can be no questions about his greatness. 11000 runs achieved in 60-70 innings less than Tendulkar or Ponting, with a batting average near 60 (13 better than Viv Richards) at a strike rate better than Viv's. The greatest ever!
