Good to see the consistency from Bajrang! Hopefully, he does not overdo it with too many back-to-back events.

Bajaran did lose a close one 8-9 against American national champions Yianni Beat the Streets event. I think he must be pretty tired playing third time in 3 weeks on 3 different continents. Yianni is a 2 times NCAA champion and is mostly among top 5 wrestlers in this category in the world, bit I think if Bajrang had been fresher, the result would have been different.

Deepak Punia wins the junior world championship in the 86 KG.

Definitely, looks like one for the future even though his weight is on the heavier side relative to the weight classes where we do well at the world level.

Yes, Deepak Punia will also represent India at the upcoming Senior World Championship in Kazakhstan, as he won the trials.

In the 92kg, Viky also scored a close win against Mongolia's Batmagnai Eenkhtuvshin, 4-3, for bronze.

In the Greco Roman 77 kg category, Sajan Bhanwal won bronze beating his Turkish opponent, Abdurrahman Kalkan, comfortably in the medal match, 11-1 ... In the quarters, he lost against an eventual gold-medalist Iranian wrestler, Mohammad Aziz Naghousi, in a close match, 3-7 ... So with that, the Indian team ended with a Gold and 2 Bronze medals in this World Junior Wrestling Championships.

Overall not so great result. We had won 7 medals last time around. Especially bad performance by our girls team not winning a singles medal.

Sajan has now won medals in 3 consecutive junior world champs now. He is really an exciting prospect to emerge in Greco-Roman after a long time.

But, the best part was Deepak Punia becoming the first Indian junior to win a gold at world championships after 18 years. Probably, it is too early for Tokyo olympics but he will certainly be a medal prospect in 4 years time if he continues this progress.

World wrestling championships began today at Nur Sultan, Kazakhstan.

Very important event with top 6 in each weight category gaining olympic quota places.

Started with 4 non olympic weight classes in Greco Roman and all our 4 wrestlers lost in first round today and did not get a chance in repachages. Anyway, not expecting anyquotas in Greco roman.

Our Greko Roman guys only 3 wins (1 round each) out of 10 weight categories. Our 130kg guy is still in repachages tomorrow but do not think much will happen there.

And tomorrow our best in women, Vinesh has got a disastrous draw. She got Rio bronze medalist Matteson in first round, if she gets thru that she has Japanese 55KG world champion Makuda next and if she gets thru that she American top seed .
Very difficult to get even in repachages.

Vinesh thrashed Rio olympic bronze medalist and current European champion Mattsson 12-0 in first round. That was great work to start with. But, now comes a tougher test against 55 kg world champion Japanese Mukaida next.

Mukaida proves too string for Vinesh and she loses tamely. :-(

Now have to hope that Mukaida reaches final.

Why has Vinesh moved up to 53kg.

Mukaida advanced to the semis so likely Vinesh will have a chance at repechage. Will need to beat Hildebrandt and the Greek to win a medal.

The other big name in action, two-time world champion Mayu MUKAIDA (JPN) looked sharp in advancing to the semifinals, capped by a 12-1 technical fall over Sara HILDEBRANDT (USA).

Mukaida’s stiffest test came in the second round, when she forged out a 7-0 victory over Vinesh VINESH (IND), the gold medalist at both the Asian Championships and Asian Games at 50kg in 2018.

The reason Vinesh said was because she was having trouble keeping her weight below 50kg. It was this problem that kept her out of olympic qulaifcation tournament 1 back in 2016. But she should have tried harder may be. The opponent whom she beat in olympics 1st round is in the finals here.

Vinesh was finding it difficult to keep her weight in control as per reports and was losing strength when she was doing so prior to competition. But, yes 50 kg would have been much easier for him. She meets an Ukranian first up in repachages, then is he wins fights American Hildebrandt whom she had beaten before. A win in that bout will confirm quota for her as part of top 6. Then, if she wins these 2 a bronze medal match against Geece,

Also in 50 Kgs, Seema is into repachages. She meets Nigerian Genesis first, a win will take her to quota match against a Russian and then a bronze match against a Kazakh.

Find it hard to understand.

She won the gold in both the asian games and asian championships last year which were almost as tough as the world championships at 50kg.
