Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
Yep. If it does not, and it will not get any better, then he should retire. He retired at the USO last year He should just gear up and only play as many tournaments as he needs to get fit for the clay season. The remarkable consistency of Federer and his longevity will possibly be unmatched for a long time.

I don't think there is any suggestion that Nadal is injured or unavailable for the clay season. He is in the draw for the Rome Masters (at Foro Italico, what was formerly known as the Italian Open). Before that, he is scheduled to play at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Yep. He posted a video of him practising before going to Monte Carlo. I suppose his knee just acts up at random at times making it impossible to continue for him.

Fairly obvious he is happy to play through the pain on clay and less so on hard.

What a great piece of writing. Brings tears to my eyes. I know several of us are in an age group where our parents are aging. Living half way around the world and not being there for them makes me feel guilty every day. I hope Laslo will find joy in his personal and professional life. His parents will always be in his thoughts and inspire him.

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
Rafa was probably not 100% at the Monte Carlo Masters. He lost in straight sets to Fognini in the SF (although that was the fourth time Fabio had achieved a win over Rafa) and dropped serve twice in the first set of the QF before beating Guido Pella 76 63. With Djokovic also losing in the QF, it appears that we'll have a more open clay court season this year -- and Federer has sensed that in choosing to play on clay this year (although he'll only play in Madrid and possibly Rome before the FO).

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
Fognini is Fognini. A genius at times. He beat Rafa fair and square. When Fognini is in a zone, he can beat Rafa and has done several times. Some of the dropshots he played against Coric were breathtaking, almost as if he is toying with the opponent. Yes, I think it is a good decision by Federer to play the FO because Rafa's health and form is not as it was the last couple of years. And, Federer is not a lock for the Wimbledon, which he was "saving" his body for the last two years. This gives him a chance at two majors to win one more.

Suddenly this year, Nadal losing on clay seems almost routine. Beaten at home (Barcelona) in straight sets yesterday by Thiem, after losing at the same SF stage last week to Fognini.

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
Theim has beaten Nadal once on outdoor clay courts in each of last four years. Along with Fogini he is one player I would expect to do well against Nadal. Yesterday he was playing really good tennis against Nadal where after the break in the second set commentators agreed that there is nothing much Nadal can do to turn around the match. in fact he was 0-40 down while serving for the match but saved each of those breakpoints with some brilliant shot making.

Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
On one side, Nadal always peaks at the French. On the other, he is getting older and his knee is getting dodgy-ier. We will see what gives in Paris.
Re: ATP Tennis/Non-India Davis Cup
He has lost a step, and can't back pedal often enough to hit inside out forehands. Those were his go to shots, sending balls shaped as eggs to his opponent's backhands. Even his pre-game calisthenics are less vigorous. Father time is making a house call. One of the greats.
