Read in an interesting stat and we now have now have highest number of players ranked in top 100 in mens singles (11). This is more than Japan and Indonesia (9), China and Denmark (7). As regards top 50, we are second to China with 5 players. China has 6 but we have 2 players ranked 51 and 52.

These are our 11 top 100 players-

7 Srikanth Kidambi
15 Sameer Varma
19 B. Sai Praneeth
21 H. S. Prannoy
40 Subhankar Dey
42 Purupalli Kashyap
51 Sourabh Verma
52 Ajay Jayaram
70 Lakshya Sen
80 Mithun Manunath
98 R.M.V Gurusaidutt

So,our depth in mens singles looks great. Now, only need to get at least in top 5 and maybe another in top 10.

Top 100 doesn't mean much in badminton. Players not in the top 5 in China, Japan or Indonesia do not get any international exposure and lack the ability to get ranking points outside of home tournaments.

That may be true for players from those nations, but Indian players are getting international exposure from early on and seem to be making use of these opportunities to improve. We never had this depth in our history before. It's time to replicate this success in Women's and doubles categories.

I would take what we have in women's singles (2 genuine medal contenders) over what we have in the men (zero medal contenders) any day.

@Hombre is consistent! He always expects a high level of performance and isn't happy with middling ok which a generic fan like me accepts easily. Let's hope that our men move to that level. The real good news is that our doubles performances are improving albeit not even at the level of our men's singles.

True, Suresh. The expectation differ. Sinhombre is satisfied only when he sees a genuine medal contender. Some of us are happy with number of players in top 50 or top 30.

Unfortunately, none of our mens singles players have been able to rise to a medal contender level at olympics/world championships. Srikanth looked like going there a couple of years back but has gone down since. Sameer Verma,Prannoy, Sai Praneeth have been around 15-30 ranking level for last 3-4 years now. Shubhankar Dey is coming up to that level now. Srikanth,Prannoy,Praneeth are all 26 now, Shubhankar 25 and Sameer 24. So, next year's olympics is their best chance to get up to medal contender level. Lets see if anyone can get upto that level in next 1 year. Of course Srikanth is the best bet.

If that does not happen, next big hope is 17 year old Lakshya sen already rising up into top 70.

In doubles, only real hopes to get to that level now are Satwik-Chirag and they have age on their side.

Hey, calling Sin Hombre, Hombre is like calling a non-vegetarian a vegetarian ;-) In certain contexts, it means "no man" but maybe more literally should be "without man". I used to think he is a she. But, now I am not so sure!

 I suspect it is a guy who is an IIT (M?) graduate. To be honest, I don't really care who he/she is.

:Offtopic: Sure, we know that :-) Neither of us case whether she is a he or he is a she. Actually, in Bengali, we have one word for he or she. Same in Telugu? Tamil?

These are our players rankings in top 50 now -

Men's Singles
10 Srikanth Kidambi (8)
13 Sameer Varma (12)
19 B. Sai Praneeth (22)
31 H. S. Prannoy (20)
32 Purupalli Kashyap (44)
39 Subhankar Dey (49)
44 Sourabh Verma

Women's Singles
5 P. V. Sindhu (3)
8 Saina Nehwal (9)

Men's Doubles
9 Satwiksairaj Ranikreddy / Chirag Shetty (16)
25 Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy (25)
48 Arjun M.R/ Shlok Ramchandran (40)

Women's Doubles
23 Sikki Reddy / Ashwini Ponnappa (23)
46 JAKKAMPUDI Meghana /Poorvisha S RAM (31)
47 Pooja Dandu / Sanjana Santosh

Mixed Doubles
23 Sikki Reddy / Pranav Chopra (23)
27 Ashwini Ponappa / Satwiksairak Ranikreddy (22)
41 MR Arjun / K. Maneesha

2018 year ended rankings are in the bracket. One big move this week is Satwik and Chirag getting into top 10 and that is about the only positive news for the year so far. Other than almost everyone has gone down in the rankings except Kashayp and Sourabh Verma at lower level. In fact I am a bit surprised how Srikanth and Sameer Verma remain in top 16 despite having such a bad year.

In mens singles, need a good few coming months to ensure 2 players in top 16 at the time of Tokyo olympics cut-off date which will ensure we will have 2 mens singles players at Tokyo.

Considering top 10 as at least long shots for a medal (at Olympics/WCs), good to see that Chirag/Satwik have now joined that list giving us 4 in that category. Of course, both Srikanth and Sindhu have dropped a bit, so hoping that these 4 all improve into next year...

Updated rankings of our players in top 50 now -

Men's Singles
10 B. Sai Praneeth
13 Srikanth Kidambi
16 Sameer Varma
25 Purupalli Kashyap
28 H. S. Prannoy
38 Sourabh Verma
42 Lakshya Sen
44 Subhankar Dey

Women's Singles
6 P. V. Sindhu
9 Saina Nehwal

Men's Doubles
7 Satwiksairaj Ranikreddy / Chirag Shetty
32 Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy
48 Arjun M.R/ Shlok Ramchandran

Women's Doubles
26 Sikki Reddy / Ashwini Ponnappa
43 JAKKAMPUDI Meghana /Poorvisha S RAM
45 Pooja Dandu / Sanjana Santosh

Mixed Doubles
27 Ashwini Ponappa / Satwiksairak Ranikreddy
28 Sikki Reddy / Pranav Chopra
50 MR Arjun / K. Maneesha

So, Sai Praneeth is now our # 1 mens singles player and in the top 10 for the first time in his career. We have 8 players in top 50 but sadly except Praneeth and Laskhya everyone seems to have hit a rough patch. We may really struggle to get a second mens singles player for Tokyo as Srikanth and Sameer Verma who are currently in top 16 would have a lot of point to defend.

Satwik-Chirag are at a career high ranking of #7. They, Sai Praneeth and Sindhu are the only ones currently in line for qualification for Tokyo.
