Something is better than nothing. But, this tour was too short. What is preventing them from having a shadow tour of five A-team tests? Money? The greed of BCCI is just appalling.

Why wait for October? Keep sending the A-team as a basis of selection. Australia did just that. Their A-team is in India before their tour team is selected. If Australia will not host, send them to RSA.

Well, one more defeat in the making. I would take some heroic batting by Rahul, Rahane and the gang to save the test. Too bad that Ishant got hurt.

Our third and fourth bowlers in all the tests, maybe except the first one, really let us down. Of course, the batting has been horrendous except Kohli and Pujara. And one offs by Vihari and Jadeja.

prasen keeps equating Rahul with Dhawan.

KL at the very least has better technique, is much younger, and is by far our best slip fielder (especially given how often Kohli, Pujara and Rahane drop catches in the slips).

I think it is clear he needs to be given a long run at the top of the order.

What a disastrous fourth day at the Oval. The only good thing is that Rahul and Rahane are fighting for their test futures -- like Dravid was at the Eden in 2001 -- and Jadeja is in form.

Not really. For all his supposed gifts, which I do not deny, he has performed abysmally in this series and in RSA. His overseas record is poor. So, it does not matter who he is and how he looks. He has been given 29 tests and still he averages around 39 including this innings. His average in the series is 27 including this innings. He survived the early part of the innings by pretty much slogging. He did not get out. To his credit. But, I doubt that will succeed in the long run. And if it does, more power to him. Sehwag showed it can be done.

Anyway, whatever, I say, because of this century, he will get more chances.

I think that is a mistake. We will be telling young players that whatever they do, if they are born with a silver spoon in their mouth, they will be getting 40 tests or whatever. I do not think accepting failures is a good precedent to set. It also discourages people like Mayank.

With respect to slip fielding, if he is so good, he must have gotten better. I remember seeing the home series and in every innings or two, Rahul would drop one at the slip. Good for him that he has improved. I hope that is consistent. At the home series, Rahane was the safe hands. Kohli always keeps dropping. Pujara has always fielded at forward short leg. So, he may take time to be a slip fielder.

If you do not perform, it is not clear that you need to be given a long run. Period. I don't care how stylish you look or how technically sound you may be on paper.

And, btw, I never equated them. I said both of them should be dumped. Does not mean that they should be in the same boat. Dhawan should not be considered again unless we are in extremely dire straits at home. Three four injuries, we need a temporary solution to win a rubber match, etc. But, Rahul should be told to perform in the A-team, domestics and then he should be considered again if he shows he can bat consistently in the SANE countries on A-team tours.

Here is what the Aussies did:
Trevor Hohns, the selection chairman, explained that the omissions of Burns, Maxwell, Handscomb and fast bowler Jhye Richardson were intended to exhort them to demand a place via domestic performances.

"Joe, Peter and Glenn were players we discussed when selecting the batting group, but we had to take into account the conditions and competition we are set to face in the upcoming series," Hohns said. "All three remain on our radar for Test cricket, but we want them to perform for their states and continue to push their case ahead of what is going to be a big Australian summer.
And, Handscomb averages 43 in 13 tests! Joe Burns averages around 37 to Rahul's 36 as an opener when I made the comment. Burns got 14 tests. The Aussies said to them that they demand better. They have higher standards and that is the way it should be. Mediocre performance should not be accepted. If you are Pant, I can understand giving him a longer run to help him develop. Rahul has had enough time. Rahul has got the sense that he is a permanent member and despite his talents seems cavalier and was taking his place for granted, it seemed to me.

I do not know why Mayank does not deserve a chance and Rahul needs chances despite failures. I am assuming Prithvi will replace Dhawan in the WI series. We should blood Mayank and Prithvi against the WI at home and see them against at least some international class pace bowling even though it is at home. How they tackle the new ball will tell us if they should go to Australia. Even if Rahul goes, we need two more openers. I am not in favor of Vijay and Dhawan.

199 to win, Jadeja still to come.

Marvellous batting by Rahul (who should bat in the middle order not at the top) and the flamboyantly promising Pant (75*).

Does not matter. That is all we have. If you do not perform, you should not be in the team. Now that he has performed, he should be and Dhawan should not be. I believe Rahane has a better technique than Kohli although it is very close. But, Rahane has not performed for nearly two years. My point is nobody should have a place in the team and take it for granted. This is exactly what the Aussie selectors' point is. We have too much star worship. That is why it takes so long to get someone like MSD out when he is not performing. It seems that when you are about to be chucked out, people play out of their skin. See Pujara's century and Rahul's. So, that threat should always be there. Except for people making their debut. They should be given a fair run ~10 tests unless they really stink up the bowling/wicket-keeping, etc.

I was also thinking Rahul looks better for the MO. He survived the first few overs when the ball was moving flashing at it and all. But, now he is in total control.

I don’t think Vihari is ready for test cricket. Karun Nair should play ahead of him. His average for Andhra in the lower division of the Ranji league is rather meaningless.

144 needed off 29 overs. Definitely doable, but Pant needs to stay calm.

Amazing that Bairstow is standing up to both Anderson and Broad. 140 needed off 28 overs: exactly 5 runs an over. Singles are going to be crucial.

Arrrgh. Wish Rahul had padded that up and forced Rashid to bowl in line with the wicket. But, great innings nonetheless. This defeat will not be on him. But on the other nincompoops with the bat.

I agree that Nair should be before Vihari.

And that was a bad shot as well. I guess that is the way Rahul and Pant had countered the English. So, you die by the same sword. Brilliant innings nonetheless. At the end of the day, Pant ends up with an average of 27 in the series. Much better than the failures who are supposedly specialist bats. Rahul 29.9, Vihari 28, Rahane 25.7, Dhawan 20.5, and Vijay 6.5. The other keeper Karthik 5.5 and Pandya 23.4. The only players above him wrt batting stats are Kohli and Pujara, who played well given the conditions. If you are scoring less than a 20 year old keeper and are a specialist bat, you need to do some soul-searching.
