It looks really difficult to pick a winner for this world cup. I will make just a wild guess and predict that Belgium will win going by the way they have played so far.

What is your pick ?

Haven’t checked, but I think several of the “immigrants” are born in France. That’s ok. If India can achieve the same, it’s fine, but who’s going to immigrate to India? Africans can and several are in India but they face serious racism in India. For the record, I’m firmly on the side of India’s current stand on eligibility. Always have been and will be even if I’m the only one in this forum.

Edit: All of the French African players I checked are born in France.

France is my pick as well... second pick is Croatia
Kujo, that’s why you’re the “moneyball” guy. But, we both know our football.
I was impressed by the French coach and how he handled Belgium in Semifinals. He held back the French players in their own half most of the time - intentionally to frustrate Belgium.

When a Belgian players says, "I would rather play like my team did and lose, than play like how they did to win" - you can be sure of a strategy that played out as planned. After that that point, I was pretty sure France will win 100%!!

Kujo, I thought the picks were made before the quarters. Need to check the date. For me, it was when France won 4-3 against Argentina. France’s attack is so good that they can almost score at will and that’s why stats like time of possession, shots on goals, etc. seemed worthless. Anyway, that’s what seemed to set France apart for me. I didn’t watch the Belgium game.

16 of 23 are either foreign born or first generation. I don't know the breakout.

Hmm. All of the African sounding names I checked in the squad were born in France. This is the site I checked:

Atithee - I wasn't disagreeing with you, just pointing out that many of those born in France are first generation. I believe all but 3 on the squad could have also played for another country, including Griezmann & Fernandez for Spain. Some of those born in France have siblings playing for other countries (Pogba does I think). I have no disagreement with any of their qualifications for France, but this issue is much more fluid in a France or Germany or Belgium that has a huge amount of recent immigration than in most other countries in the world.

Prashant — I got thrown away by “first” generation. Interestingly, I had this discussion a few days ago with a coworker. I’ve always defined first generation as the generation who got their first, e.g., you and I. My coworker and you define the first generation as the first generation born there. I suppose I need to redefine first generation for myself.

I believe most folks in the US refer to those born in the US from immigrant parents as "first generation." The parents are referred to as immigrants. This may be understood differently in other countries (such as the first floor example).

Arjun, yes that’s what my coworker said. I suppose I’ll redefine my understanding going forward.
