At the 82 games Rajiv Mohta won Gold or Silver IIRC, watched him on TV when following those games.

Lakshman Singh won the gold and Rajiv Mohta won the silver at the 1982 Asiad in Delhi, the first time golf was included (I think).

The Asian Games swim team is announced. Team I am excited for the 16-year old Neel Roy. His parents were my classmates in college. His dad was a good swimmer. And his mom was my college debate team partner! I had told him four years ago, "Asian Games Bronze!" He has several age-group National Records. I think he broke Virdhawal's age-group record in some event. I have to check. If not this year, I am hopeful for the next AG! of course, I am biased :-)

Don't know exactly. But my guess is 6' and growing. He already stands over his dad, who was possibly a few inches taller than me. So, his dad was about 5'10". His mom was also significantly tall for an Indian woman. I'll ask his dad.

update: His height is 6'3".

One needs to be tall to be a short distance swimmer. 6' 3" and growing is wonderful news.

Strangly in compound archery, there are no individual events only team events. In boxing, 3 heavier classes are omitted this time. Also tennis team events and shooting team events are out this time. Also non-olympic shooting events are omitted. So, considering these, 9 of our last time's medals are gone ( including 1 gold). So, 10 golds and a total of 46 medals would be par for the course.

But, of course some improvement is desired. If one looks at various world rankings and world leaders for the year, there are actually 16 events where we would be favourties for gold - mens and womens hockey, mens and womens kabaddi, mens singles (Saurav Ghoshal) and mens team in squash, mens doubles tennis (Rohan and Divij), Womens archery compund team, Bajrang in freestyle wrestling,1 in shooting and 6 in Athletics.

Allowing for some slippage, I would be disappointed with anything less than 15 golds and 50-60 medals this time.

Meerabai Chanu has pulled out due to injury -

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu pulls out of Asian Games

That is a setback and we have probably lost 1 gold due to this.

I am hoping someone else picks up a gold to make up for that. Expecting someone to pick up one in boxing - although the former soviet states are very powerful there .

True, but that is not as much as blow as Meerabai Chanu pulling out. Deepika Kumari even if fully fit would be at best expected to pick up a bronze with strong Koreans, Chinese and Taiwanese archers. Our recurve archers have never done well at the major events even when they were doing in various world cups and all. So, I have lowered expectations from them till they actually pick up significant medals at Asiad/Olympics.

Checking the swimming squad, this might be our strongest ever squad we ever fielded.
Our medal best medal chances are
Virdhawal Khade - 50m freestyle- though he resumed full time swimming just last year, he actually broke his own national record 2 months back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABC4bx5J5vU
and among the asian games participants only 2 Japanese and 1 Chinese have better times this year.

Sandeep Sejwal - 50m Breaststroke - Sejwal too broke his own national record 2 months back in Singapore nationals. The timing 27.59 would have brought him s gold 4 years back where he won a bronze. 1 Japanese, 1 Chinese and 1 Korean have better timing this year. But the olympic champion of this category Balandin Dmitriy(whose form dipped after olympics) and Daiya Seto (mutiple world Champion in various categories though not in this one) are just below him in timings.

Sajan Prakash - 200m butterfly. - He clocked a national record timing of 1:58:08 on may 6th one month after a national record timing of 1:58:87. He has a 2 Japanese and 2 chinese ahead of him this year but he might need to shave 2 more seconds to even get into sight of bronze.

With all national record holders participating this year we might have an outside chance in 4X100 Medley relay and 4X100 freestyle relay.

So, only an outside of chance of a medal in swimming still which is how it has been for us in Asian games. I think only 2 medals there so far - Khazhan Singh and Sandeep Sejwal.

Badminton team draws have come out and it looks bad for us in both men and women. Women have a first round bye but play top seeds Japan in the QF. It will require a miracle to win that- both Saina and Sindhu have to win their matches and somehow third singles or one of the doubles pairs have to pull off an upset which is a long shot.

Men play Maldives in first round which will be easy but in the QF they will meet hosts Indonesia where we will need to win all 3 singles matches as their doubles teams are too powerful.
