Re: India in England, 2018
Interesting that Ishant is still being called the "spearhead" of India's test side, when he doesn't command a regular place in the test XI...
Aaron finished with 2/72 in that innings, and has gone 0/48 in the second innings after Durham were (foolishly) asked to follow on.

Aaron went wicketless in the second innings -- 0/102 as Durham were bowled out for 403.

I don't know why/how did someone pick Varun though. He has a poor record in Ranji Trophy Division B - avging 34.

He is a genuinely quick bowler, which is why there has always been interest in him despite his waywardness!

Re: India in England, 2018
This comment says it all. People have a fascination for speed. Speed does help on some wickets but I don't think you need it in England where there is swing in the air at least in the early part of the summer.
But, our fascination with speed has been there for over a century. Sandeep Sharma never gets a look. Gagandeep never got a look. Why because they are not that fast. The subjective selection criterion is always to go for what looks sexy. Baseball has moved to a more data-driven approach and cricket has started moving towards that.

Re: India in England, 2018
Interesting selection in that Rahul got into the ODI team by virtue of about 10 IPL games despite having been somewhat mediocre and slow in ODIs, whereas Manish's work in about 22 ODIs is not good enough. The power of the IPL, I suppose. Rahul is a classy bat and has the potential to make it big. I am glad at least it is him and not some other crappy batsman.
The 10 game thing is also evident in the selection of Umesh Yadav for the ODI team. Shardul Thakur had a decent 3 games. Why is he dropped? Better SR and better average than Umesh. So, three games is small sample size. But since Umesh has been crap, why not give Thakur a fair run.
Similarly, Dhawan gets retained in the T20s despite his lacklustre international T20 career and none of the youngsters such as Iyer, Pant, Samson get a nod.

Re: India in England, 2018
I love the fact that India A will tour England a month ahead of the full Indian team. This is terrific, because anyone who really shines during that tour can be drafted in to the full test side as well. Additionally, three test players -- Saha, Vijay and Shami -- will play the final four-day match for India A, so that they have at least one game in England before the test series begins. The surprise selection is KS Bharat as 'keeper of the 4-day team. Rajneesh Gurbani gets a look-in with India A for 4-day matches, and his swing bowling should thrive in England. I would also have picked the tall under-19 swing bowler Porel, but that's too much to ask! The LOI squad includes all the promising youngsters -- Pant, Vihari, Samson. Nice to see Prithwi Shaw and Shubman Gill getting some valuable experience on this India A tour (although Gill will play only the LOIs, while Shaw is in both squads):

I wish stuff like this had been done ahead of the South Africa tour.

Why only the three test players? The rest are busy with some LO contests?

Re: India in England, 2018
Pujara's miserable form with Yorkshire continues: 17 and 0 in the latest match (against Surrey, the side that Kohli will be joining after the IPL).
Ishant is revelling in England conditions. In the latest match (between the two top sides in Div II of the county championship), Ishant took 3/62 and 4/52 for Sussex against Kent.

Why is Pant not in T20 team as a pure batsman? Not sure how good or bad he is as a wicket keeper. He is the highest scorer in the world in T20s this year with more that 1000 runs already.

Varun Aaron was one of the match-winning bowlers as Leicestershire beat Glamorgan by 3 runs! Aaron took 4/65 and 2/66. See this report:
http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/8204 ... vision-two
But Aaron was thrashed (0/46 in 7 overs) in the first limited-overs match he played for Leicestershire.

Ishant had the best strike rate with the bat (7* in 2 balls) and economy rate with the ball (1/39 off 9.2 overs) for Sussex, but couldn't prevent Hampshire winning a close one-day match.

Re: India in England, 2018
Pujara finally got runs, making 73 in a one-day match against Warwickshire at Leeds. He was slow, taking 96 balls to make his runs; his strike-rate was 76.04, versus a team strike rate of 82.33 but presumably he isn't expected to be the team's accelerator. He was the sheet anchor and top-scorer in this match. Root, Bairstow and Ballance didn't play.

Re: India in England, 2018
Ironically, Pujara has come into his own in the limited-overs matches. He has just made his third consecutive 50 -- scores of 82 (against Durham), 73 (against Warwickshire), and now 61* (off 66) against Worcestershire.
