Ram is continuing with his experiment of mixing Challenger's with ATP's.

And after the 2 Challengers in China he might play the ATP in Istanbul where he has made the qualies . and later may even try the Madrid Masters depending on withdrawals and if he manages to make the qualies cut , Madrid would suit his game , since Madrid is at an altitude and would ideally suit his big serves .

With few more withdrawals in the MD , Ram is now amongst the Top 4 seeds in the quali draw at Istanbul which means he will avoid the top guys at least in the preliminary rounds..

However the lower half is stacked with Tomic , Robredo,Kokinakis , Ymer and host of quality players where not a single match can be termed a guaranteed win , like in the Challengers.

Have to stretch every sinew to make the cut and even after making the MD there could be more possible bigger danger awaiting in R1.
Realy tough these European ATP's

Where are you seeing the qualifying draw for Istanbul? I don't see it on the tournament website (it says "coming soon") or on my ATP/WTA scores app.

MensTennisForum has Ramkumar at #5 on the qualifying entry list, and has Tomic, Kokkinakis, etc lower down that list.

Apparently Cilic is getting married on May 28th and may withdraw -- which would leave the draw bereft of anyone in the top20 or even top25. Certainly a juicy main draw to get into!

It seems to be a 16-person qualifying tournament, so just two wins needed to qualify in. (There are 4 slots for qualifiers in the main draw). Good decision to play there, although the likes of Robredo (#173 now) will be dangerous lurkers in the qualifying draw.

The ATP list shows , Filip Krajonovic , Borna Coric , Horacio Zeballos having withdrawn and strangely only the first Guy in the quali list Malek Jaziri seems to have moved into the MD which make Ram 4th on the quali list.

If those 3 places goes to the players from the quali list and if Cilic withdraws , than Ram is sniffing distance away from the MD and with half a day still left, who knows some more players might withdraw, than he has a good chance even to make it to the MD .

That is because Millman and Cecchinato, the 2 guys who were in the main draw alternates but not in the qualie list have moved into main draw. There are 3 ATP tournaments this week and so those who are close to main draw at all the 3 places must not have not put in their name in qualies draw of any 1 tournament. If they put in their name in qualies list at 1 place, they are automatically scratched out from other 2 tournaments. Here they want to keep their option to go to either of 3 places wherever they get into main draw.

As I see, Cecchinato has also got into Estoril main draw and has to choose between Estoril and Istabul.

There are 2 special exempt too still to clear at Istanbul. So, cut will drop further but I doubt if it will drop so much for RamK to make it in.

Yes Sameer correct , if you enter as an alternative for MD , than you cannot play the quali's , that is why Ram is stil stuck in the qualies as he didn't sign for MD , whereas the Alts have got in inspite of 3 withdrawals.

At the most he will be the Top seed in the qualies and may even get a R1 bye.

Lets see what happens 7 hrs still left before the draw is made.

No, for the same tournament you can enter as a MD alternate and in qualies. You cannot do so for different tournaments. If RamK did not enter as alternate to MD, perhaps he had not decided in advance to enter this tournament and later made a decision to enter qualies.

On the tournament website, he was certainly entered as an alternate for the main draw as well -- although perhaps that was a preliminary list, because he was very far down on the list of alternates.

From menstennisforums,

Qualies Draw Out and it seems RamK ended up as one out of the MD and is the Top seed in the Qualies.

(1)Ramkumar Ramanathan (IND, 115) vs. Aldin Setkic (BIH, 241)

No, he would have been long way out from the main draw because his ranking as on main draw cut off date was only 136. He is the top seed in qualies based on his current ranking of 115.

Good draw for RamK first up. 30 year old Setkic is 1-9 for the year on challenger tour and ATP qualies. If RamK has recovered well from his travel from Asia, he will have a good chance of progressing.

RamK won the first set 6-4 and was break up in the second 1-0 ... He again broke Setkic in the 9th game when he was serving to stay in the set.
In the final qualifying RamK is facing Argentine former top-130 player, Marco Trungelliti.

2nd set
RamK breaks
1-0 RamK hold
2-0 Aldin hold after saving break points
2-1 RamK hold
3-1 Aldin hold after saving break points
3-2 Longish break (bio break? or medical time-out?), RamK hold @30
4-2 Aldin hold @30
4-3 RamK hold @15
5-3 Ramk breaks for a win
6-3

At €486K TEB BNP Paribas Istanbul Open 2018, Turkey

Good to see RamK get back to winning. RamK might have played Trungelliti before (in practice/training) as he (Trungelliti) lists Barcelona as his place of residence.

There was not much doubt that RamK would win that match unless he was too jet lagged. I guess he would have got a couple of days rest after travelling from China to Turkey.

Next one is a much tougher match. Trungelliti is 10-7 for the year in ATP challenger/qualies which is similar success to RamK (14-10) and Trungelliti has won most of those matches on European clay including 5 in a week in a challenger title which he won 2 weeks back. So, Trungelliti may have a slight edge on RamK on clay. Hope RamK proves otherwise.

It will be a tougher match against the Argentine, who beat the Austrian Ofner (#136) 3 and 2 in Q1.
But in RamK's current form (from making the big Challenger final two weeks ago in Taiwan, and winning the key Davis Cup match), he undoubtedly has the momentum and the form to win through to the main draw. 6 points for today's win, 6 more for winning tomorrow. Now at 119 in the live rankings, RamK will edge up to 118 if he wins tomorrow.
