Yes, good performance overall - worthy of our #6 ranking overall. We went 4-0 in matches against #9 NZ (at their home) and #16 Japan. We went 1-1-2 (W-T-L) against #3 Belgium with our 2 best results coming last.

Right now, the top 5 appear to be a cut above the next group, so it is good to see India trying to bridge the gap to the top 5.

An assessment by our coach, Sjoerd Marijne, about team's overall performance.
"One of things we wanted to improve was consistency and we did that during the tour. Off the four matches against Belgium, we lost two matches closely and won and drew the other two."
"We have more field goals and PC conversions. Also, the position of players and the conversion rate inside the (striking) circle has improved."
The coach was also happy with the performance of the debutant s- goalkeeper Krishan Pathak, midfielders Simranjeet Singh and Vivek Prasad and striker Dilpreet Singh. "It was nice to see how fast they pick up the seniors' style. They have talent is known, from here on they need to show character and mental strength to become better.
"
Marijne happy with team's show in four-nation hockey

Hockey India has hired Australian Chris Ciriello to help our drag flickers to improve in penalty corner conversion. This is the related article-

This is embarrassing for the president of FIH:
http://www.thehindu.com/sport/hockey/ba ... 659661.ece

It was a silly outburst and not expected from a 'president' of an organisation as important as the FIH.

However, he has behaved poorly before- sacking of Walsh, interfering with Van Ass' team meeting, keeping Pakistan out of JWC and Sultan Johor Cup and Sultan Azlan Shah Cup.

Meanwhile, what are the chances of (yet) another sacking?

I disagree with some of the comments made by the 'senior' players. The younger guys did ok, it was the experienced lot that gifted PCs or goals or missed at the other end.

In general, the senior players are the problem in Indian hockey more often than not. It's good that the younger players are being fielded earlier and that there is competition for spots. In fact, the Hockey India should stop differentiating between "senior" and "junior" players and instead focus on the best and most promising players (which would emphasize the so-called junior players over the non-performing senior players).

I have a feeling that Marijne is going to be sacked. The 'senior' players and HI are not happy with the CWG performance and are questioning Marijne's methods. Everyone is trying to find a scapegoat. The culprits (selectors, 'senior' players and HI) will stay on and the coach is always the easy target.
http://www.thehindu.com/sport/hockey/en ... 701988.ece

I think the visa delays for Marijne are a sure sign that a sacking is imminent. Harendra is likely to be moved into the men's coaching role and some useless unknown guy will handle the women's side. Both teams will go downhill from here!!

I think, HI have to stick with Marijne till the CT and let Harendra carry on with the women's team till the WC at least.

Typical reactions from HI. They got rid of the best option (Walsh) and the next best one (Oltmans) and then wonder why we were so bad at the CWG. Well, firstly pick the right players and have a solid midfield to stop giving away space near our D. We chose only 4 midfielders who were usually overrun by most teams. There was no creativity in attack and we had the usual weaklings messing up in every game.

Marjine has been dismal so while he is being made a scapegoat, the game of musical chairs might lend us a decent coach again which is the best we can hope with the worm at the helm of Indian hockey.

As expected, the coach has been removed. In fact the men's and women's coaches have switched around.

Not sure if this is a good thing, because Harendra has had a few attempts at the men's job and been pretty poor. However, he impressed me with his U21 stint between 2014-2016 and also with his (short) stint with our women's team in the past year.

The worry is both teams going backwards with this latest round of musical chairs. I expect the women to recede back to their poor levels of the last decade.

We need much better quality players and our system is not producing enough of these. We also squander our better prospects. In the latest squad of 55, there is no place for Devendar Walmiki, Nikkin Thimaiah, Harjeet Singh, Affan Yousseff or Gurbaj.

Uthappa and Talwinder have gone at least, and now we need Mandeep and Akashdeep to go too.

Yes, it is quite crazy what HI has been doing. If they wanted Harendra as mens team coach and Marjine as womens team coach why did they waste 6 months doing exactly the opposite. HI seems hell bent on destroying our hockey just when we looked to be on the way up under first Walsh and then Oltmans.

One of the concerns is the knee jerk reactions after a bad tournament or two. We have been cr*p for so many decades that if we don't have a good run, the coach should not be dumped so quickly. The sensible thing to do would have been to tweak the selection policy and keep the coaches till the end of the year at least.

This article shows the poor showing in both circles:
http://fieldhockey.com/index.php/commen ... ed-chances

It wasn't just the CWG that this kind of inefficiency (or panic) cost us badly. What do you expect when we have 2 of the most frustrating forwards ever (Mandeep and Akashdeep) and we select Amit Rohidas as the right back and ignore Gurbaj? Akashdeep's comparison with Emile Heskey is funny....and so accurate.

In another article, Joachim Carvalho wants the selectors sacked:
http://fieldhockey.com/index.php/commen ... m-carvalho

Couldn't agree more with both of these articles. The selection was flawed- even more than is usual for us.

Overall, Marijne's methods as CWG were one dimensional. Pass reasonably well till the 23m line and then whack the ball into the circle....every single time. The midfield was over run due to lack of personnel and experience and the defending was about normal (lots of silly, soft PCs conceded).

So nice to watch it. The times for the goals are at 24.30 (Md. Shahid), 53.09 (Surjit Singh) and at 1:00.48 (Ashok Kumar). Half time at 43.21.

After finishing second in just concluded Champions Trophy we have climbed to the fifth position in the newly updated FIH ranking with 1484 points and Germany is in the sixth place with 1456 points ... Indian women retain their 10th place with 1040 points.
