Viswanathan Anand - World Champ for 8 Years.

Basically a froum to cover chess now that we seem to have sufficient interest in the game.

Vishy didn't use the two whites and ended up drawing the last 3 games... and finished 4th...

Gained 2.8 ELO from the event and is at #8 in the list with 2778.8...

Anand with a poor start in the mega tournament in Norway with 2 losses in the first 4. Both of our super GMs are in a rut.

And emphatically broke out of it by beating Caruana with black. Now at 2.5/6.

Anand with another poor tournament in Leuven in the Grand Chess Tour (rapid and blitz). Decent openings but too error prone and inconsistent.

Very disconsolate at the end of it and talking about no point playing chess like this. It feels like the retirement is approaching sadly.

Vishy with one of his best displays in recent times at the Sinquefield cup by finishing 2nd behind MVL.

Anand with a terrible London chess classic where he lost in 3 rounds and did not win a single game.

It looks like the Sinquefield tournament was an one-off good performance in a steady decline as he turns 48.

You mean he is pretty much done? Time to look for some other job?

Sorry to digress as usual, but that reminds me of this old classic from the 1963 Tamil movie hit, Kadhalikka Neramillai ('have no time for love"). The song's main line goes as "Viswanathan... Vaela Vendum" which literally means, "Viswanathan... Need a job" :)

[Incidentally, it seems the song's line was composed based on a 1961 US jingle that went, "Eisenhower boogie woogie".]

He is probably done as a top level player but he can and should continue to play as long as he wants.

He has provided us enough to celebrate over the years and we should not begrudge him if he wants to continue playing competitive chess.

^^ Yes, he is one of the greatest ever in chess, and has earned every right to continue as long as he wants.

Anand shows that he can still compete in the shorter format with a win at the world rapid championships.

Great effort by Anand to win a world championships at the age of 48. He beat the current classic world champion Magnus Carlsen here. It shows that one can still not count him out.

And a very impressive second day means he also finished tied-2nd in the blitz (Carlsen won and Karjakin finished with the same points as Vishy).

Excellent work from the 48-year old defying his age and classical form. Both his rapid and blitz ratings are above 2800 again.
