This result sucks as it doesn't help anybody. It's like Ramk beating Somdev in Chennai. Indian challenge will end tomorrow.

:Offtopic: Most of the beedi brands are pretty local, me thinks! There used to be a couple of brands in Andhra region that were endorsed by Japaprada and Sridevi, no less :p. I also remember another brand - "Teacher Jaadi Beedi" :)

Relieved to see two Indians in the QF. Next up for our players:

[QF] Rutuja Bhonsale (IND, 571) vs Olga Doroshina (RUS, 398)
[QF] Karman Kaur Thandi (IND, 285 ) vs [2] Georgina Garcia Perez (ESP, 238)

Yes, Rutuja has impressed in last 2 weeks. She was the only Indian to reach QF last week and now reached QF in a bigger 25K event.

Putting the results in our usual format -

[R2] (7) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,286) d. Valeriya STRAKHOVA (UKR,348) 61 61

[R2] (WC) Rutuja BHOSALE (IND,569) d. (Q) Kaja JUVAN (SLO,529) 46 62 63

Next,

[QF] (7) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,286) vs. (2) Georgina GARCIA-PEREZ (ESP,238)

[QF] (WC) Rutuja BHOSALE (IND,569) vs. Olga DOROSHINA (RUS,398)

Doroshina has been in great form in last 3 weeks being a title winner and a finalist in last 2 weeks and now a QF here. She thrashed Rutuja 62 61 last week . So, let us see if Rutuja puts up a better challenger against her this week.

Karman has a tough match too in the QF .

Thanks Sameer! The winner of the two QF matches will meet in the SF. So if Karman and Rutuja win, they meet in the SF.

Those were a couple of impressive wins. Two in the QF is probably the best we could have hoped for.

How about Rutuja? If I am not mistaken, she wll now get back to about #525, very close to #527 that was her career high, a whole 5 years ago as a 16 year old, before she went to hell (er... College Station,TX) for her college career. I don't know if college helped her improve much in tennis, but for a while there it looked like she might have even regressed. Maybe she is finally hitting a stride? She was the biggest hope we had since Sania, as of 2012. Anyway, she is that rare (only?) Texas A&M aggie that I would ever root for.

And Karman's 61 61 scoreline surprises me. I guess when she gets into a flow and stays focused in the second set, she can do these things.

All four quarter finalists have been playing brilliant tennis this week (Doroshina, Karman, Georgina and Rutuja in that order, Rutuja has good home court support too).

Doroshina is very solid, looks difficult to beat. Between Karman and Georgina, it may go to three sets with Karman having slight edge.

BTW, Karman's game is shaping up really well. Solid at both flanks, solid serve and impressive return game. I also see improved composure in between points that probably explains her not letting slip the advantage. I would put her definitely at top 200 level, may be much better.

If Doroshina continues to play at the same level she has been displaying over the last two days, she can be difficult to cross though.

Good to see that Rutuja was able to build on the surprise upset of Ankita in R1, and has reached the QF. Karman continues to be very impressive. Let us hope she can take it all the way this week!

Two in the QF is just meeting initial seeding. Expectation at home should be to beat that.

I agree. We could have had three. The lucky loser who took Zeel's place has reached the QFs without dropping a set. Zeel might well have gotten that far if she hadn't twisted her ankle :(

BTW yesterday she pulled out of next week's event too. Hope her injury is not too bad.

Karman lost 46 36. From the point differential (66 to 74), it looks like she wasn't a one-sided match or anything, but she got only 3 of 8 BPs converted and Georgina won 6 of 13.

And Rutuja just dropped the first set 4-6. The day isn't going well. She is also playing a close match and it can possibly turn around.

Rutuja lost 46 46 to Doroshina. Looking at the point progress, she never really seemed to take an upper hand in the match. She never had Doroshina in much trouble, except for that break in the first set. She saved 2 match points on her serve at 3-5 and then one more while facing serve, but fell in the end.

I did not expect Rutuja to win and she gave a much better fight against the same player who had thrashed her 16 26 last week. But, disappointed by Karman's loss here. She needs to start beating these players in 200-250 range regularly if she wants to move ahead to top 200. She does beat them every now and then but is not consistent in winning against these level players still.
