It's great to see the two upsets today. I thought there was only a small chance for any Indian qualifier. I can live with 8 Indians in the main draw.

Remarkably, both Zeel and Dhruthi won fewer points than their British rivals. This indicates that they played the bigger points better. Indeed, both of them had better break-point conversion ratios.

These are the match-ups for our players in the main draw -

At $25K ITF Women, Pune

[R1] (Q) Zeel DESAI (IND,610) vs. (6) Diana MARCINKEVICA (LAT,285)
[R1] (Q) Dhruthi TATACHAR VENUGOPAL (IND,751) vs. (8) Mai MINOKOSHI (JPN,291)
[R1] (WC) Riya BHATIA (IND,541) vs. (Q) Kaja JUVAN (SLO,529)
[R1] (3) Ankita RAINA (IND,275) vs. (WC) Rutuja BHOSALE (IND,569)
[R1] (7) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,286) vs. (WC) Mahak JAIN (IND,813)
[R1] (WC) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,502) vs. Valeriya STRAKHOVA (UKR,348)

A bit unfortunate to see Ankita-Rutuja and Karman-Mahak come up against each other in first round itself. Apart from these 2 all Indian match-ups, very tough matches for qualifiers Zeel and Dhruti but decent ones for Pranjala and Riya. Hope we get 4 Indian thru to the second round.

Actually I think Riya has a much tougher opponent than Zeel. Kaja Juvan could be the upset artist of this tournament, whereas I don't see Diana Marcinkevica progressing very far.

Mai Minokoshi is very up-and-down, so I hope Dhruthi catches her on an off day.

Pranjala has the most winnable match of these four.

2015 ONGC ITF JUNIORS 2015 IND Clay QF THANDI 6-2 5-7 6-4
2015 India ITF Junior 1 IND Hard 16 THANDI 6-3 6-3

Mahak gave a valiant fight against KKT even when she was 14 years old(!!!). Can she go one better this time? (Smelling an upset here).

Yes, Kaja Juvan is the current WR#5 junior player. I don't think it's even easy for Riya to win a set but happy to be proved wrong.

I don't like cheering for one Indian against another, so I'll be happy with either outcome. But I think it will be Karman in straight sets.

Karman in a 3 setter ..although she could wrap it up in straights but as for now Karman is too good to be that consistent and also against an opponent who in herself is quite competitive!!
Surely would be a mouth watering contest having the rising stars of the nation getting on head to head :D

Riya lost in straight sets and Karman beat Mahak in straight sets to advance to the second round.

At $25K ITF Women, Pune

[R1] (7) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,286) d. (WC) Mahak JAIN (IND,813) 62 64

[R1] (WC) Riya BHATIA (IND,541) l. (Q) Kaja JUVAN (SLO,529) 06 46

Also, it seems Zeel has some kind of injury or illness. She along with Pranjala pulled out of their doubles match while being at 1-1 in the first set and then Zeel withdrew from her singles match too and was replaced by a lucky loser. :-(

Ankita-Rutuja, Pranjala and Dhruti to play their first round matches tomorrow.

Rutuja upsets Ankita in the first round. Pranjala and Dhruti lose their matches.

[R1] (Q) Dhruthi TATACHAR VENUGOPAL (IND,751) l. (8) Mai MINOKOSHI (JPN,291) 67(4) 46

[R1] (WC) Rutuja BHOSALE (IND,569) d. (3) Ankita RAINA (IND,275) 63 67(6) 62

[R1] (WC) Pranjala YADLAPALLI (IND,502) l. Valeriya STRAKHOVA (UKR,348) 46 36

So, only 2 Indians remain in the singles main draw.

[R2] (7) Karman Kaur THANDI (IND,286) vs. Valeriya STRAKHOVA (UKR,348)

[R2] (WC) Rutuja BHOSALE (IND,569) vs. (Q) Kaja JUVAN (SLO,529)

Karman had beaten Strakhova in the same tournament last year. Hope she repeats that. Looks a tough one for Rutuja against a junior top 5 player.

Dhruthi had a 5-1 lead in the first set and then blew her chances.

I hope Ankita isn't injured. There had been an MTO during the match and she did fade away quickly after that :(

Let us hope for Rutuja to smoke her opponent like a Kaja... Does that brand of beedi still exist?
