Subhankar Sharma wins the Joburg Open :notworthy:
Last 2 days the youngster (21) played as the leader and showed great maturity to bring home the trophy with NO drop shots.
Great 2 rounds of -10 and -7 sandwiched between 2 rounds of 3 under does it for him.
He played steady and just looked to avoid any mistakes in the back nine today. Parred the last nine holes...Handled the presssure well.

Also seals a European card for 3 years, Asian card for 2 years (maybe Sunshine Tour Card too which he may not use) and qualifies for THE OPEN in 2018. woohoo

Life changing for him and he almost skipped this event as did all the other Indians who flew home after last weeks Mauritius Open. What a great decision it turned out to stay back and play by SS!!
:goodluck: for 2018.

Flawless performance from Shubhankar Sharma.

He was calm and composed all throughout and had no drop shots for last 55 holes.

He maintained his 54 hole lead onto the next day, unlike SSP and Arjun Atwal who lost it on the final day in the previous two events.

Shubhankar Sharma started the European Tour this year as category 22 member and now has earned the category 4 membership until 2019.

He won a prize money of $191,532.99

Good luck for future tournaments.

Thanks. This actually brings up a question. What is the highest amount of prize money any Indian ever made in any sports in one event? LP and MB never made $191K in any single event (may be 130K each for the Wimbledon title in 1999?). I don't think any tennis player has ever made that kind of money (even inflation-adjusted). Has any cricketer made this much in any one event? Boxers?

Does a season of the IPL count as one event?

Anirban Lahiri made $765K for his T-2 finish at the memorial in 2017. He's probably had several other finishes with more than $200K in prize money.

Arjun, my guess was that it must be one of the golfers who made the most money. But I didn't know that it was as high as $765K. Whoa. Easily a few times the best paycheck ever in tennis for an Indian. The golfers make entirely too much money.

Prashant,I don't think a season counts. Of course the top cricketers earn a whole lot over a season or a year. But I had in mind something that happens in a week or so (or maybe a test or a T20 tournament or something). Basically, the paycheck that suddenly drops on a sportsman based on the performance at an "event" is what I had in mind, and not the money from a signed contract which is not depending on the performance in a short period like an event. It is hard to define, and really this may only apply for nearly-individual sports like badminton, tennis, golf, archery, track and field, swimming, shooting, boxing, wrestling, etc with prize money.

At the very top, tennis competes with golf. In the rank and file, golf wins easily. US Open tennis paid 3.7M to winners this year (the other GS about 2.5M). The Masters winner got 2M in comparison.

But as you get into the smaller tournaments, golf pays significantly better.

Congratulations to Shubhankar Sharma!!
It will be good to follow this youngster’s progress on the European tour, in parallel with Anirban’s on the PGA tour.

The top couple are actually held by Jeev for some of his big wins (Anirban unfortunately has come up short in that sense so far in his career).

Jeev's big prize money performances
$873K ; Volvo Masters 2006, #1
$792K ; Singapore Open 2008, #1
$636K ; Scottish Open 2012, #1
$360K; Cadillac Championship 2009, #4
$341K; Ballantine's 2008, #2
$300K; Volvo China Open 2008, #1

Jeev still holds the overall Indian record in USD for his win at the Volvo Masters in 2006 which was the year-end championship for the European Tour where he earned $873K.

That said, it is also the biggest win in stature by an Indian ever so well-deserved. Has any Indian ever won a bigger tournament in tennis?

In ATP lingo, that win was at a high level ATP500/low ATP 1000. Arjun's one win in the PGA tour was at an ATP250 level tournament. Shubhakar's win is more at the level of a challenger in ATP terms.

Of course, Anirban had a chance in late 2016 to become the first Indian to win $1M+ in a single tournament in prize money at the CIMB classic where he was leading by 4 going into the final round and "choked" badly in the front 9 to finish T3 which still earned him $406K.

Some of Anirban's top prize money finishes above $300K include
- PGA championships T5 2015 $367K
- CJ T5 2017 $303K

In Individuals event, I think Viswanathan Anand has won $1M+ as prize money at the World Chess Championship.

^ that does appear to the case. Anand won $1.65m in 2010 when he defended his WCH by beating Topalov.

But that ain't so sport! Maybe a "game" at best. Not a sport. Doesn't count :)
