Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
Badminton seeding is weird. #15 vs #16 men and #11 vs #12 women are R1 matchups? How?

Quite fair in this case. In a draw of 32 there are 8 seeds and #11,#12, #15 & #16 are not among top 8 seeds . So, what else can you do to avoid these match ups?

You're right Sameer. I assumed without looking that it was a 64 person draw, in which case I would hope they seeded 16. If it is 32, not much you can do.

Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
What does happen in badminton is draws are made 3-4 weeks in advance. So, many a times rankings change a lot in the intervening period and also there are a few withdrawals but they do not change the draws. This results in strange match ups but I don't think that is the case here. Need to check if that happened in Saina's match up.

Seed the top 16. Or even better, seed the top 32.

Satwik-Ashwini started with a win against Taipei pair ... In the final qualifying, they r facing experienced Danish pair, who defeated them in the last month's Denmark Superseries in the straight games.

Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
Yes, that would be ideal. Even better would be to pair up 1 against 32, 2 against 31 and so on. But, I guess administratively it is too difficult for organisers to do. It is not done in any sport.

Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
I think administratively that can be done. We had discussed this maybe 10-15 years ago. I think Jay had alluded to the fact that if you always do 1-32, etc. you would have the same or very similar matchups every week. I don't think that would be that much of a problem because of differences in entry lists etc. But, I guess it is what it is ...

Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
I think they need to have 16 seeds. One can scramble/randomise the 9-16 seeds so that match ups are not fixed by the seedings alone. I recall Saina playing the 8th seed when she was ranked 9 in R1.

I'd be fine with that though I do like the 1v32, etc. matchups. I want to see the top seeds go long in the tournament.

Re: China Open / Hong Kong Open World Superseries 2017
Saina started with a confident win against similar ranked Zhang ... She dominated the match, but next, she is facing a tough match against in-form Japanese girl, Akane Yamaguchi, who defeated Saina three times in 2017 and last two losses were in the last month in Denmark and French Superseries.
Chinese WR #4 pair proved too strong to Satwik and Chirag.
