Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
Does Sumit have any weapons in his game like a big serve or a big forehand DTL?
Without those, there is no chance that he can be a top 20 player in the modern game.

News about exclusive tour for Asian players -
Exclusive Tour for Asians from April 18 to Develop Existing Talent Pool
With not too much money (events with prize money of US$ 5,000 and US$ 7,500) and no ATP points, not sure how this will benefit Asian players. They will be better off playing on futures tour, IMO.

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
China seems to have finally got some real talent on the mens side. 17 year old Wu Yibing became the first Chinese player to win a Grand Slam boys singles title at the US open. He also won the doubles title with his Taiwanese partner.
Despite hosting premier ATP events for years now, China has struggled to find anyone good on the mens side. Wu may finally break the drought of a top 100 ranked mens player for them.

Wu also became the first Asian winner after Leander's 1991 US Open junior singles title win ... Also, Yibing Wu and Yu Hsiou Hsu became the first Asian pair to lift the junior doubles title.

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
He is almost the same age as Shapovalov who is reaching Masters semis and a year older than Auger-Aliassime who last week became the second youngest to win multiple CH titles and the youngest since Nadal to break into the top 200. The German-Spaniard Nicola Kuhn was also one of the youngest winners of a CH earlier in the year.
Very good prospect by Asian and Chinese standards (and ours), but nowhere near the elite talents of his age group.

Shapovalov won his first CH at 17y11m and is around the 30th spot.
It certainly appears that there is an excellent generation coming through who are all making waves at the senior level at 16/17/18
Interesting too where Sumit was in terms of youngest futures winners

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
Yes, as of now I do not expect this Chinese to be a top 25 player or anything. But, top 100 or top 75 certainly looks on cards.Sin Hombre wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 1:19 am He is almost the same age as Shapovalov who is reaching Masters semis and a year older than Auger-Aliassime who last week became the second youngest to win multiple CH titles and the youngest since Nadal to break into the top 200. Yuki is right up in that list at #17.Sin Hombre wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2017 1:19 am

Sumit has won 9 futures titles already when he is just 20+. At the same age , Yuki had won 7 but then Yuki won a challenger title before he turned 20 while Sumit is yet to win a couple of rounds at challenger level.
Also RamK won his first futures title only a month after his 19th birthday but had already won 7 titles by his 20th birthday.
Clearly these 3 ( Yuki, RamK and Sumit) are the best talents that we have produced in a while. Now, we only need all 3 of them to peak in next couple of years time and we can have a solid base for davis cup team.

Shanghai CH R1:[WC]Yibing Wu def. [2]Polansky 6-3 7-6(3)
Probably more impressive than the USO juniors win?

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
It is definitely a bigger win for the 17 year old 496 ranked Wu. Beating a 29 year old veteran (ranked 128), who had been a consistent top-150 player for a decent chunk of his pro career, got to carry higher weightage. However, the mileage one gets from a GS win (albeit a junior one) is more for obvious reasons.

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
This kid Wu is now in the final of $75K Shanghai Challenger beating all the higher ranked players on the way. He is the youngest Asian challenger finalist since Nishikori in 2007.
He next plays challenger legend Yen Hsun Lu. Lu has won 28 challenger titles in his career which is a all time record and just keeps coming to Asia and win these challengers to keep his ranking within top 75.
If the Chinese kid can beat him in the final we have to take him seriously.

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
Lu retired after the first set so the Chinese kid wins his first CH.
I think he is #31 in the all time youngest CH winners.

Re: Asian Tennis players' thread ...
Someone on MTF noted this which is quite interesting
It seems to be a sudden leap in level by Wu considering he was losing in the first round of 3 consecutive FU tournaments in May and July and then made the Chengdu CH SF, National games SF, Junior USO title and now Shanghai CH title

Spinach at work...?
Perhaps not. He is not yet 18, and young players do sometimes take large strides in short order.
