True, Jaydeep. Ashwini is not on decline. She can be quite good in doubles for next 5 years. The only younger womens doubles player who comes close to Ashwini's abilities in doubles is 23 year old Sikki Reddy. So, Satwiksairaj had to pair up with 1 of then. I saw him and Ashwini play in Sudirman cup and they were quite good.

Somehow in badminton players tend to be doubles specialists right from young age. It is not like tennis where players turn to doubles only after they have tried their hand in singles and found that they are not cut out for that. I have also wondered why is it so.

Varma, Ashwini's age is 27 yrs., not a 30+ yr old veteran ... :p
I didn't call her a veteran, Prasen did :p I only said she might be on the decline. But 27 is not bad at all, so it might benefit Satwik in the long run.

That's right, Sameer. I remember Gopi complain about that a few years ago when asked why no doubles pairs are coming up in India while we had several singles players in top 50. This is totally opposite to what we see in Tennis. Gopi said players don't stick to doubles as per his advise for many reasons. To begin with, parents don't like that idea. Secondly, most of them get recruited by companies like BPCL, ONGC etc., who force them to play both singles and doubles. He said if players stick to doubles and only doubles, results will be much more better. Slowly but surely we are getting there, I think.

I mean Varma said that she may be on the decline. So, I used that term. I think I have been in the U.S. far too long. In the U.S. somebody has played 4-5 years in a league is called a "veteran". I used to think just like Jaydeep did that these guys are not veterans! And think about the weirdness of the American usage. Somehow subconsciously, I have fallen prey and did what I thought was weird now. Language morphs itself based on the environment you are immersed in. To my defence, 27 and 30 are not that far apart :-)

27 to 30 is probably half of your sporting prime :p (unless you are playing golf)

I do not follow golf :-) Yes, 3 years is possibly more than half of the average NBA, NFL, NHL, and MLB careers here. But, that is taking the average person, who often is out of the game because they are not good enough. I think the people who are good play a lot longer and three years is not that big a chunk of their career. A lot of top badminton players do not last beyond 30. Whereas an MLB player could last until 35. Superstar NBA players last until 37 or so. Etc. So, 27 is pretty close to 30. But, yes, 24-30 could be the best years of a male badminton player's lifespan. MLB players possibly mature around 27-28 and then play another 6-7 years in peak form.

We now have 4 Indian males ranked in the top-25 in singles -- Srikanth is 8th, Sai Praneeth is 15th, Jayaram is 16th, and Prannoy is 23rd. Ajay Jayaram is 29 years old, but the others are all 24. I hope they become like the Swedish tennis contingent of the 1980s (Wilander, Edberg, Jarryd, Nystrom) in reinforcing each other's successes.

Of these players, Sindhu, Ajay Jayaram and Sameer Varma are the only ones who have big points to defend for the rest of the year. For the others there is a good opportunity for improving their rankings significantly. Srikanth is sure to qualify for the year end masters event along with Sindhu. So that becomes a further opportunity for him.

True, in fact for year end masters, there are a separate set of rankings called " Destination Dubai Rankings" which take into consideration only points earned at super series tournaments in this calendar year.

Srikanth is #2 in those rankings which also indicates that those above him in BWF rankings are holding on to lot of points for rest of the year. Srikanth has a great opportunity to finish among top 5 in the rankings at the end of the year. Apart from Srikanth and Sindhu who should easily qualify for masters, Sai Praneeth and Saina are ranked 12 and 14 respectively. So, they also have some chance of qualifying if they do well in rest of super series events for the year.

There has been great progress at the top in all categories especially mens singles. Srikanth, Prannoy and Sai Praneeth are all in top 16 now. In womens singles, Sindhu is getting better and better. Also encouraging sign in mens and womens doubles with pairs of Satwik/Chirag and Ashwini/Sikki.

Great all round progress by the Indians. Hopefully, this will continue through till 2020 as some of these players should still be at an optimal age and we have some other juniors coming through (Lakshya Sen?) who might join them at the top.

Overall not a great year for us in terms of ranking progression. In mens singles, everyone except Sameer Verma ( and Kashyap and Subhankar at lower leve) went downhill. In womens singles, Sindhu and Saina are pretty much at same level for last 2-3 years.

We have made some progress in doubles particularly the pairing of Satwik and Chirag. I hope they take the next step towards top 10 next year. Also other double pairings ( Manu/Sumit,Sikki/Ashwini, Satwik/Ashwini, Sikki/Pranav) can aim to get into top 15/20.
