Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Good to see the 2 new career highs! However, overall significant slippage in rankings of Indians from the end of 2015, where we had 1 in top-100 and 5 in the top-300.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Most of that slippage is due to injuries. Both Yuki and Somdev who were in top 300 have been badly affected by injuries this year and have hardly played. Sanam was another one who was in top 300 than but his form has gone down drastically and he has fallen outside top 500.
But for injuries, even Saketh would have been much higher than his current ranking of 186. RamK is slightly above his last year's ranking.
The ones who have made significant progress are Sumit and Prajnesh. Both would be aiming to end the year at least in top 300 ( if not making the AO qualifying draw cut). Sumit has 31 points to defend for the rest of the year and Prajensh has 60 to defend. So, they will need to have some big runs in the tournaments till the end of the year to achieve that.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
"But for injuries" is not much real compensation!
Injuries are part and parcel of a sportsperson's career, as we know also from Sania's experience. All that we can say is that some of our players have the potential to be where they were last year (or marginally higher) -- but are injury prone.
Leander paid maximum attention to his fitness, and so was rarely injured -- but he had a couple of very serious health scares (one that might have been life-threatening, worms in his brain). He probably achieved his full potential as a doubles player because of that laser-like focus on fitness -- and probably achieved his singles potential too (although the game was changing, and his early coaching and style of play were not ideal for the game as it evolved in the first decade of his career). The main lesson for aspiring tennis players is that fitness counts, big time!!
We know that Saketh has the potential to be a top-100 player, but we cannot assume away his injuries. Similarly, Yuki might have been capable of being top-70 or even perhaps top-50, but right now must focus on getting back into the top-200. He has never played more than 9 months injury-free on the tour, so we can never assume that he can play a full year injury free.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Any chance for Jeevan to finish his year in top-100? BTW, does anyone know when was the last time we had 4-5 players finishing their year in top-100?

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Yes, If Jeevan can win the title at this week's Toyota challenger, he will end the year in top 100. Even a final could be enough depending on other player's results.
Last time we had 5 players in top 100 was in 2013 when both Divij and Purav entered top 100 and Leander/Rohan/Mahesh were already there.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Yeah, it all looked so good and hopeful when the year started... We even were on the verge of something truly memorable when that reversed line call came out of the blue against Saki at the US Open (I will never forget it). I didn't want to even follow tennis after that for a while. It felt that bad. That spoiled the year itself for me. But let us hope for a better next year.prasen9 wrote:What a year 2016 has been Our #1 is now almost falling out of 200 and our #2 out of 250. Hope next year is better ...

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
It has indeed been a miserable year, with even our top men's doubles player in danger of falling out of the top-30.
The only one who retained her rank was the peerless Sania Mirza. It wasn't as great a year for her as 2015, but she started and finished 2016 as the world #1 women's doubles player, and held the #1 rank every week throughout the year. That is an achievement worth celebrating
Among the next cohort of women, Ankita had a reasonable year, especially the final quarter of the tennis year. And Karman, Pranjala, Zeel represent a promising cohort of young women.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
2016 year end ATP singles rankings - mens singles - (with last year's ranking in brackets)
192 Myneni, Saketh (170)
227 Ramkumar Ramanathan (248)
320 Gunneswaran, Prajnesh (483)
356 Sumit Nagal (416)
417 N. Sriram Balaji (538)
434 Vardhan, Vishnu (485)
513 Sasi Kumar Mukund (552)
532 Bhambri, Yuki (93)
564 Prashanth, N Vijay Sundar (379)
617 Siddharth Rawat (629)
I think 2 players who made real improvement this year were Prajnesh and Sumit. Prajnesh can now play challengers regularly and hope he goes inside top 250 soon. Sumit should really be ranked higher than he is based on his level of play and should get into top 300 soon next year.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
Rankings wise, it is a poor year for Sumit. His goal iirc was to reach a top 250 ranking by French open for 2016 and is still some distance from it.

Re: Indian tennis player rankings
True, Sumit had stated that as his goal late last year. But, it seems he gave up chasing that soon as he played only 5 tournaments till May which was the cut off for FO qualies. Then, he went on to play series of challenger qualies in Europe tiil August . While he did well in those, it was not enough to garner a lot of points due to tough draws. With better scheduling he would have finished it at least in top 300.
I hope he corrects it this year.
