Re: Asian Series tournaments - Nov/Dec. 16 (China,Hong Kong,Macau,Korea)
Sameer was considered to be at the level as Srikanth but took a lot longer to make the breakthrough.
Hopefully, Srikanth can show the form that took him to WR#3 at 21 and Prannoy learns how to string more than 2 matches in a row, and we have 3 young players in the top 15 in the world.

Nice run by Sameer Verma and great consistency from Sindhu!
Several Indian men have shown top-10 potential but seem to lack consistency (and fitness) to actually get and stay there. Hopefully, Sameer can win the title here and have a strong year ahead...

Re: Asian Series tournaments - Nov/Dec. 16 (China,Hong Kong,Macau,Korea)
Sameer Verma was a bronze medallist in the junior world championships in 2011. Both H.S. Prannoy and Sai Praneeth were bronze medallists at the junior world in 2010 and Prannoy was also a silver medallist at youth Olympic games in 2010. Srikanth did not have much success in juniors but had big success in pros at early stage. All of them were having wins over top 5 players in last couple of years.
So, all 4 of them are quite talented and capable of making in to the top 10 in the world . Only need some consistency to build up like Saina and Sindhu on girls side. Hope to start with Sameer can win a title here.
And of course hoping Sindhu can make it double for us in singles.

Sindhu loses the first game 15-21. Taiwanese Tai is one of the most talented player on the circuit and can play some of the most outrageous shots. Sindhu will have to really raise her game to come back into this match.

Sindhu tried hard but Tai was too good on the day.
At YONEX SUNRISE Hong Kong Open, Super Series
[F] Pusarla V. Sindhu (IND,9) l. (4) TAI Tzu Ying (TPE,3) 15-21 17-21
Hope Sameer can prevail in his match later.

In the mens singles final, Sameer Verma lost the first game 14-21 but stormed back strongly to take the second set 21-10. Quicksilver reflexes and super attacking shots by Sameer in that game against taller local player.
Go Sameer.
Go Sameer.

He is 4-11 down in the decider. Making too many errors.

And he lost.
[F] Sameer VERMA (IND,43) l. NG Ka Long Angus (HKG,4) 14-21 21-10 11-21
Angus becomes the first player from Hongkong to win a super series title.
Not a good day for us. 2 Finals and 2 losses.

Good job by Sameer Verma to make the final, but surprised he was playing a Hong Konger who is ranked #4 in the world. When did Hong Kongers become so good at badminton?
Ditto with the #3-ranked Taiwanese: how come she is ranked so much above our Olympic silver medallist?! (Ok, she won today, but hopefully the Olympics does carry more ranking points than any other tournament?? Perhaps not…).

PKB, that was typo from Sameer ... Ka Long Angus Ng is currently ranked #14 but his best ranking was #9 in September 2016.
Overall good performance by Sindhi and Sameer Verma ... Sindhu is showing consistency in her game/ results and Sameer Verma is also start playing to his true potential ... Hopefully we will discuss lot more good performances in 2017.

Re: Asian Series tournaments - Nov/Dec. 16 (China,Hong Kong,Macau,Korea)
Tai Tzu Ying has been one of the best players on the circuit for a while now, and will be the latest player to reach the #1 ranking next week. As was said numerous times in the leadup to the Olympics, there is very little separating the top 10 (8 after the Chinese retirements) in women's singles. No reason yet to expect PVS to dominate. Both her and Marin tend to lift their games at the biggest tournaments though.
Saina is particular though needs to figure out TTY soon though with her 6 losses in a row.

Yes, my mistake, PKB as Jaydeep pointed out.PKBasu wrote:Good job by Sameer Verma to make the final, but surprised he was playing a Hong Konger who is ranked #4 in the world. When did Hong Kongers become so good at badminton?

The Olympics do give more points than other tournaments but only slightly more than Super series premier ones. Overall, Tai has been the more consistent player than Sindhu and so will move to world # 1 this week.

Re: Asian Series tournaments - Nov/Dec. 16 (China,Hong Kong,Macau,Korea)
Why is Sindhu's ranking still stuck at 9 despite her winning the China Open Super Series and finishing runner-up in the HK Super Series? Are the badminton rankings updated less frequently than every week?

No. Badminton rankings are update on Thursday after a completed week. Sindhu had fallen to #11 a couple weeks back. She climbed up to #9 after China SSP title and will move up to a career high #7 this Thursday.

Disappointing loss of Sameer in the second round against lowly ranked Indonesian opponent ... Good to see Sai and Kashyap r taking advantage of a weaker draw ... Tough comeback win for Saina against Indonesian girl Hanna Ramadini.
