It is shocking to see the minuscule amounts that pass off as prize money in badminton. I wonder how much the winner makes? 500$?

Edit: I was off but not by much. The prize money is US$540. The 6K is for five events: Men's/Women's Singles and Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

Well I had this exact discussion with few folks during the Swiss Open GPG. It had a prize money of $120k and is equivalent to a Tier-III/II WTA event in Tennis.

The prize money was distributed in the following fashion

So if someone reached QF in a GPG event, he would walk away with $720 for that week. Assuming a player plays about 14 events in a year and is ranking around 20-40 in the world like Kashyap, Prannoy, that is not much.

Heck, total prize money of $120K is the pay of most people in the IT / Banking industry with 4-6 yrs experience I guess - I just can't understand why there are only 20-24 GPG / Super / Super Premier events in the world. Surely Badminton is more popular than that especially places like INA, CHN, JPN, SIN

Top - 80 Players are able to stay afloat thanks to (a) Govt jobs which fund their travel and require them to play in 1-2 PSSB events / year (b) International trips for events are organized by BAI with coach/support system provided (c) Endorsements that they might receive.

The above is by itself not as lucrative say compared to the IT industry and additionally the player needs to be in the top-80 to become part of the troupe. If the player is from some obscure country with no support system then forget it.

Top 100 does not excite much in badminton. I think it is somewhat similar to top 500 in tennis. Top 20 is something where you can really start getting excited about a player in badminton or at least top 30, similar to top 200 and top 300 in tennis.

I hope Shreyansh can improve to that level.

Yes - I was hoping more from the bench strength though - he doesn't appear to be more than a top 50-80 potential guy. Its just that the more players we in that pool, the better it is to raise the standard of the game.

Top 100 in badminton is more like top 1000 in tennis. You are mostly playing with part timers and up-and-coming players. Shreyansh has no future as a full time professional tbh based off his record and age.
